People often put lemon in their water to give it a little bit of extra flavor. Water is served with a lemon slice at many restaurants. Drinking lemon with water is also a common approach taken during detoxification diets or as part of weight loss plans. Lemon with water contains nutrients your body needs such as vitamin C, potassium and fiber. However, this beverage may also cause side effects if you drink too much of it. Consult your doctor before drinking lemon water for medical reasons.

1. Tooth Erosion

Consuming too many acidic foods or beverages, such as many glasses of lemon water per day, causes your teeth to have a constant amount of acid washing over them. This will erode tooth enamel and make your teeth extra sensitive to hot or cold foods. To protect your teeth, drink acidic beverages through a straw. If you’re already experiencing tooth erosion, consult a dentist who can recommend treatments such as bonding or sealers.

2. Heartburn

Drinking too much lemon with water may trigger heartburn or make this condition worse if you’re used to experiencing it. Heartburn occurs when the esophageal sphincter, between your esophagus and stomach doesn’t function properly, and acid from your stomach moves back up into your esophagus, a process known as reflux. (Heartburn is also referred to as acid reflux.) Heartburn causes severe burning and pain in your chest. Cutting back on acidic foods and drinks helps to prevent and relieve heartburn symptoms.

3. Frequent Urination and Dehydration

In rare cases, lemon water might have a diuretic effect. Lemons have a high content of vitamin C or ascorbic acid. This nutrient is well-known for its diuretic properties, which means it increases urine production in the kidneys thereby helping your body to eliminate excess fluid and sodium more quickly. While regular lemon water -- made with a moderate amount of lemon juice or by adding lemon slices to water -- loading your water up with large amounts of lemon juice might have a diuretic effect in some cases. If you start to feel dehydrated after heavy lemon water consumption, consider cutting back the amount of lemon juice you add to your drink.

In Conclusion

Don't drink lemon with water to treat any medical problem without the advice of your doctor. If you experience any side effects from drinking this beverage, stop drinking it. If side effects persist, seek medical attention as soon as possible.

The rowing machine often plays second fiddle to the more popular treadmill and elliptical trainers at the gym, but this effective cardio machine can help you burn up to 316 calories in 30 minutes of vigorous work if you weigh 155 pounds. How often you use the rowing machine depends on your particular fitness goals. Beginners looking to build up their general cardiovascular fitness should start with just 15 minutes a day, two to three times per week, while competitive rowers might use the rower almost daily to hone their technique.

In theory, you could use the rowing machine for every one of your cardio workouts, but if your goal is general fitness, you'll benefit from varying your workout regularly. Performing repetitive movement on the rowing machine can lead to back strain and knee pain, especially if your form is off.

Combine two or three rowing workouts per week with jogging, cycling or fitness classes, for example. Someone looking to improve their health with exercise will do cardio 150 to 300 minutes, or more, per week. For weight loss, you'll need to go 250 minutes or more; and, if you love rowing, you can spend the majority of that time on the rowing machine as long as you don't experience pain.

A competitive rower uses the rowing machine to augment outdoor training and strength training year round. In the fall, these athletes might use the rower for long sessions with low resistance while in the spring -- closer to competition -- the emphasis is on shorter workouts at a higher intensity. To prevent injury, ramp up the time you use the rowing machine gradually. Most injuries related to rowing occur because you do too much too soon.

Abstract

The dead wood and forest soils are sources of diversity and under-explored fungal strains with biotechnological potential, which require to be studied. Numerous enzymatic tests have been proposed to investigate the functional potential of the soil microbial communities or to test the functional abilities of fungal strains. Nevertheless, the diversity of these functional markers and their relevance in environmental studies or biotechnological screening does still have not been demonstrated. In this work, we assessed ten different extracellular enzymatic activities involved in the wood decaying process including β-etherase that specifically cleaves the β-aryl ether linkages in the lignin polymer. For this purpose, a collection of 26 fungal strains, distributed within three ecological groups (white, brown and soft rot fungi), has been used. Among the ten potential functional markers, the combinatorial use of only six of them allowed separation between the group of white and soft rot fungi from the brown rot fungi. Moreover, our results suggest that extracellular β-etherase is a rare and dispensable activity among the wood decay fungi. Finally, we propose that this set of markers could be useful for the analysis of fungal communities in functional and environmental studies, and for the selection of strains with biotechnological interests.

Highlights

Calorie Burn of the Treadmill vs. Elliptical Trainer

The American College of Sports Medicine recommends raising your cardiovascular activity to between 60 and 90 minutes a day a minimum of three days per week if you want to lose weight. Two of the most popular ways to fit in these workouts are the elliptical machine and the treadmill--but which one gives you the best calorie burn for your time?

Features of the Elliptical

Elliptical trainers incorporate two styles of movement in one machine--stair stepping and rhythmic striding, as in cross country skiing. Some elliptical trainers have poles that you can hold onto and move back and forth during your workout to increase the calorie burn and total body aspect of the workout. The amount of calories you burn in any given elliptical workout depends on the setting of the ramp height, resistance level and the speed at which you move your legs (stride speed). Because your feet never leave the pedals, the elliptical provides a low-impact workout that is friendly to your joints and back.

Features of the Treadmill

A treadmill allows you to walk, jog or run indoors. Speeds on the treadmill range from 1 mph to as much as 15 mph on some commercial treadmills. The ramp of the treadmill may also be adjusted from a 0 percent incline to about 15 percent. Some specially designed commercial treadmills provide as much as a 35 percent incline and even allow for downhill training with a minus 3 percent grade.

Potential

The amount of calories you burn in either exercise depends on how hard you work, how efficient you are at the exercise and how much you weigh. Beginners at any activity always burn more calories than someone who has trained her muscles to efficiently move. A 150-pound woman working at a moderate intensity burns between 250 and 300 calories in a half hour on the elliptical. This means you are seriously working, however--breaking a sweat and raising your heart rate to about 70 to 75 percent of maximum. Using an elliptical with arm poles burns more calories. The average 30-minute run on a treadmill for a 150-lb. person going approximately at a 10-minute mile pace burns about 300 calories. Running on an incline amps the calorie burn.

Considerations

An elliptical trainer is a good choice for beginners or for those who have significant weight to lose. Because you can adjust the resistance to meet your needs, you can work at the highest level you can without putting pressure on your joints. The upright position you hold while on the elliptical also helps the back stay strong and avoid strain that might occur with the impact of running. Although the treadmill has the potential to scorch calories, it largely depends on your speed and time committed to running. You have to build up to a certain cardiovascular and strength level to run for any duration. Beginning runners should walk or jog first in order to ease into running's intensity, or they risk developing shin splints and joint pain. Walking burns significantly fewer calories than running, unless you add big hills or work in speed intervals.

Verdict

If you're a seasoned exerciser who runs and adds inclines, the treadmill offers the most calorie burn because you're supporting your own body weight. However, the elliptical--if used in an aggressive manner with the arm poles--comes pretty close to the treadmill's calorie burn. The few extra calories you might burn on the treadmill, however, come with a greater potential for injury. Consider incorporating both modalities in your regimen to reap the most benefit. Cross-training in this manner helps you avoid boredom and injury while sticking to a routine that can only accelerate your weight loss progress.
