Overview

When you carry extra weight in the face, you are likely to appear heavier to people who meet you for the first time. Although you cannot spot-burn fat, you can make some easy and quick lifestyle changes to reduce puffiness and tone your face. Following a reduced calorie diet also helps you lose weight anywhere on the body, including the face.

Healthy Diet

According to the Mayo Clinic, eating a well-rounded diet helps relieve water retention. This symptom commonly occurs while you have your period and may give you a bloated look in your face. Your diet should include plenty of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains. Aim for a minimum of three servings of fruit and vegetables on a daily basis. Avoid certain substances that make you retain water, like alcohol and caffeinated beverages. Instead, drink plenty of water each day. Replacing other beverages with water not only reduces your caloric intake but also reduces puffiness in the face.

Calcium

At a minimum, you should consume 1,200 mg of calcium on a daily basis, according to Good Housekeeping. Calcium helps your body burn more fat and reduces the amount of water you retain in the face. Eat a diet that includes high calcium foods, such as milk, cheese, green leafy vegetables and orange juice. If you are concerned you don’t get enough calcium in your diet, supplements are available.

Low-Sodium Diet

If you eat a diet high in salt, you have an increased risk of facial bloating. Limit the number of foods high in sodium in your diet, such as table salt, canned vegetables, processed meals, fast food, lunch meat and chips.

Abstract

The objective of this work was to evaluate the properties of particleboard made from oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) trunks treated with hot water and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Experimental panels were manufactured from oil palm particles soaked in hot water for 30 min and soaked in NaOH with 2% concentration for the same time span. Urea formaldehyde adhesive was used for both types of particles as binder. Bending, internal bonding strength, thickness swelling and water absorption of the panels were tested. Scanning electron microscopy and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were employed to analyze the properties of raw materials and manufactured panels. Based on the findings in this study, samples made with raw material treated with hot water resulted in 863.93 MPa modulus of elasticity and 7.09 MPa modulus of rupture which were higher than those of control panels and made from NaOH treated particles. Internal bond strength of the specimens also followed the similar trend. Both treatments improved the dimensional characteristics of the specimens.

Abstract

The carbonization characteristics of tension wood (TW) and compression wood (CW) from Paulownia tomentosaand Pinus densiflora branch woods, respectively, were investigated and compared to those of opposite wood (OW) and lateral wood (LW). The carbonization was conducted at 400, 600, and 800 °C. Heating values, pH, char yields, cell wall structures, and combustion characteristics were different in TW and CW, whereas only little differences were found among reaction wood, OW, and LW. The heating values of TW charcoal were lower than those of CW charcoal at 400 and 600 °C, while the pH of TW charcoal was higher than that of CW at all carbonization temperatures. The char yields of CW were the highest among all the samples at all carbonization temperatures. Furthermore, the TW charcoal was more thermally stable than CW charcoal. SEM observations revealed significant differences in the cell wall structures of the woods before and after carbonization. The gelatinous layer in TW disappeared, and the helical cavities and intercellular spaces in CW persisted throughout the carbonization process. The cell wall structures of the wood samples became smooth and amorphous as the carbonization temperature increased.

Abstract

Experiments were conducted to quantify the effect of several variables on the mortality of insects exposed to an anoxic treatment in order to generate a model linking mortality to these variables. This study aims to explore the possible interest of using such a model to determine the characteristics of treatment (especially duration) needed to guarantee insect mortality with a given level of probability. Trials were performed on Hylotrupes bajulus larvae, which is a widespread species known for its high tolerance to anoxic conditions. The studied variables are the initial mass of the larvae, the treatment temperature (21, 30 and 40 °C), the treatment duration (four durations for each temperature tested) and whether the larva is held in wood or in a petri dish (directly exposed to anoxic atmosphere) during the experiment. It was found that, while the last variable is not correlated with mortality, treatment duration and temperature are significantly and positively correlated with it. Larvae with higher body mass were also shown to have a better resistance to the treatment. Based on these results, a model including insect initial mass, treatment temperature and duration, together with the interaction between these two variables, was determined. This relatively simple model appeared to be a useful tool in overcoming the difficulty in defining the modalities for anoxic treatment in order to reach a given level of mortality.
