Antioxidants in Blueberries vs. Raisins

Raisins have an advantage over blueberries if you’re looking for nutrients such as vitamin B-6 and iron, but when you want to boost antioxidants, you should choose blueberries over raisins. Raisins contain a small amount of two dietary antioxidants -- vitamins C and E -- but blueberries rule the day with five times more of both vitamins. You’ll also get a significant amount of antioxidant flavonoids from blueberries.

Antioxidants Explained

All of the life-sustaining work inside your body, from producing energy to synthesizing tissues and hormones, is accomplished by molecules interacting with other molecules. These reactions result in unhealthy byproducts, including molecules called free radicals. Free radicals are also produced when your body reacts to stressors, such as sunlight and air pollution, according to a report in the July 2010 issue of "Pharmacognosy Review." As free radicals interact with cells, they cause damage called oxidative stress. This is why substances that neutralize free radicals before they harm cells are called antioxidants. Without antioxidants, damage from free radicals accumulates and may cause diseases such as cancer and atherosclerosis.

Vitamin C Stops Free Radicals

The U.S. Department of Agriculture describes vitamin C as having high power to neutralize a wide variety of free radicals. In addition to protecting all types of cells, the water-soluble vitamin also keeps free radicals from damaging proteins, fats, carbs and DNA, according to the Linus Pauling Institute. One cup of raw blueberries contains 14 milligrams of vitamin C, compared to 3 milligrams in the same portion of raisins. Women should consume 75 milligrams of vitamin C daily, while men need 90 milligrams.

Vitamin E Protects Fats

Vitamin E has one main job: to provide antioxidant protection to essential fats throughout your body. In this role, it stops free radicals before they destroy fats that fill vital jobs, such as forming cellular structure, regulating genes and producing energy. Vitamin E also protects fats in lipoproteins, which carry cholesterol through your blood. Damage to lipoproteins may increase your risk of cardiovascular disease, according to the Linus Pauling Institute. You’ll get 0.8 milligrams of vitamin E from 1 cup of blueberries and barely 0.2 milligrams from raisins. Your recommended dietary allowance for vitamin E is 15 milligrams daily.

Antioxidant Flavonoids

Flavonoids represent a very large group of substances produced by plants. They don’t provide nutritional benefits, but they do protect your health by regulating cellular communication and working as antioxidants. Blueberries are a rich source of flavonoids, containing more than 500 milligrams of flavonoids in a 1-cup serving, according to the USDA National Nutrient Database. By comparison, raisins only have about 1 milligram. If you have a choice, organically grown blueberries may provide more flavonoids than conventionally grown fruits, according to the USDA’s research published in the July 2008 issue of the “Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.”

Blueberry season is from May to October. Blueberries can be sweet or tart, small or large and range in color from maroon to purple-black. It is full of flavor and contains 80 calories in every 1-cup serving. Blueberries are a nutritional powerhouse and have a high antioxidant rating.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a water-soluble essential vitamin. You need adequate intake of vitamin C to support normal growth and development. Vitamin C is also needed to make a protein called collagen. Collagen helps to form skin, tendons and ligaments. Vitamin C is also an important antioxidant. Antioxidants protect your cells from free radical damage preventing or delaying the development of some cancers and cardiovascular disease, according to the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements. Adult men need 90 milligrams of vitamin C a day and adult women need 75 milligrams a day. A 1-cup serving of blueberries provides 18.8 milligrams.

Manganese

Manganese is a trace mineral. Manganese is needed to help form your bones, connective tissue, sex hormones and blood clotting factors. It is also needed for the formation of the antioxidant superoxide dismutase, Many Americans have inadequate intake of manganese, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Inadequate intake may cause infertility, bone malformation, seizures and weakness. Adult men need 2.3 milligrams of manganese a day and adult women need 1.8 milligrams a day. A 1-cup serving of blueberries provides you with 0.40 milligrams.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin. Its primary role is to serve as an antioxidant. It is especially protective against the oxidation of lipids, according to the Office of Dietary Supplements. Vitamin E also plays a role in immune function, cell signaling and gene expression. Vitamin E deficiency in healthy adults is rare, says the Office of Dietary Supplements, but most Americans do not meet the recommended dietary allowance. Adults need 15 milligrams of vitamin E a day. A 1-cup serving of blueberries provides 1.46 milligrams.

Vitamin C is also helpful for immune-system functioning. Based on a 2000-calorie diet, 1 cup of raspberries contains 53 percent of your daily value of vitamin C. One cup of blueberries contains 23 percent of your daily value of vitamin C.

Manganese is a trace mineral that is abundant in raspberries and blueberries. This mineral makes up the compound called superoxide dismutase, which fights free radicals. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, manganese may offer the following health benefits: decreased premenstrual syndrome symptoms, improved bone health, decreased arthritis pain and protection from low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in diabetics.

One cup of raspberries contains 41 percent of your daily value of manganese based on a 2000-calorie diet, while 1 cup of blueberries provides 24 percent. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, 37 percent of Americans don't get the recommended dietary intake of manganese.

PRODUCER CONTRACT STRATEGIES IN GM CROPS

Abstract: A number of challenges exist for genetically modified (GM) crop development at the production level. Contract strategies can resolve some of these challenges. Contracts can be designed to induce legal adoption of GM crops by varying technology fees, violation detection, and penalties. The objective of this research is to analyze contracting strategies to determine terms to induce legal adoption of GM wheat and to minimize technology agreement violations. A simulation model of the prospective introduction of GM technology into hard red spring wheat was developed. Results illustrate that contracts can be designed to induce desired behavior. Technology fees, probability of detection, and the level of non-GM premium were the most notable factors influencing adoption decisions.

Abstract: The present technical report deals with monitoring the efficiency of measures/strategies for coexistence between genetically modified (GM) and non-GM maize crop production. The report is a follow up of the best practices for coexistence in maize crop production proposed by the Technical Working Group (TWG) for Maize of the European Coexistence Bureau (ECoB). The ECoB TWG maize held three meetings in October 2010, June 2012 and November 2012 and examined state-of-art-knowledge from scientific literature, research projects and empirical evidence provided by numerous finished and ongoing studies looking at the appropriate level of monitoring; monitoring strategy; sampling and testing issues; detection methods; analysis of results and possible follow-up. The review of this information (coming from a total of 51 references) is presented in a structured manner in Section 3 and 4 of the document. The overview of the activities carried out by EU Member States for monitoring effectiveness/efficiency of coexistence measures in maize crop production (Section 3), shows a still limited experience in practical terms, due to the limited experience in commercial cultivation of GM maize in most EU member states. However, the present report provides technical guidance to those responsible for monitoring the efficiency of coexistence strategies.

Genetic Engineering and Sustainable Crop Disease Management: Opportunities for Case-by-Case Decision-Making

Abstract: Genetic engineering (GE) offers an expanding array of strategies for enhancing disease resistance of crop plants in sustainable ways, including the potential for reduced pesticide usage. Certain GE applications involve transgenesis, in some cases creating a metabolic pathway novel to the GE crop. In other cases, only cisgenessis is employed. In yet other cases, engineered genetic changes can be so minimal as to be indistinguishable from natural mutations. Thus, GE crops vary substantially and should be evaluated for risks, benefits, and social considerations on a case-by-case basis. Deployment of GE traits should be with an eye towards long-term sustainability; several options are discussed. Selected risks and concerns of GE are also considered, along with genome editing, a technology that greatly expands the capacity of molecular biologists to make more precise and targeted genetic edits. While GE is merely a suite of tools to supplement other breeding techniques, if wisely used, certain GE tools and applications can contribute to sustainability goals.

Abstract: The Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) is currently undertaking research activities in order to describe the current situation and functioning of the markets for non Genetically Modified Identity Preserved crops and derived products. For this purpose, JRC-IPTS organized an International Workshop on "Markets for non-GM Identity Preserved crops and derived products" in Seville on 21&22 June 2012. This workshop brought together key stakeholders in the supply chain, as well as leading scientists and experts active in the field of non-GM IP markets.
