Wood-Based Industry Apprenticeship Sheme

WISDEC is also involved in conducting a specialized programmed - the Wood Based Industry Apprenticeship Programme since 2003. The Programme represents the collaborative efforts in training of MTIB, the wood-based industry players, Pembangunan Sumber Manusia Berhad (PSMB) and the National Vocational Training Council. The programme was officially launched by the Deputy Minister of Primary Industries Malaysia, Y.B Datuk Anifah Haji Aman, JP, on 29 January 2003 has been succeeded in creating a pool of skilled workers in the furniture sector.


The Wood Based Industry Apprenticeship Scheme is a structured programme, which provides an excellent career opportunity to school leavers. who are interested to pursue a career in furniture manufacturing. The sponsoring company pays for all the expenses during the training period of the apprentices. Upon the successful completion of training, PSMB and the National Vocational Training Council will award apprentices the Malaysian Skills Certificate Level 1 and 2. A secured job is waiting the apprentice upon successful completing the course.

Timber Processing Furnishing Technology (TPF)



This training program emphasizes on hands-on training where trainees are given continuous practical application exercises, along with formal classroom training by competent and highly experienced trainers of WISDEC and complemented by members of the timber industry. This approach is extremely important as the practical activities will enhance the effectiveness of the training. The trainees are also taken on visits to factories for better exposure to the industry and to ensure a more complete training experience. Upon successful completion of the program, trainees will be awarded Certificates of Competence - recognized by MTIB and the industry.

The Profession Management Development Program (PMD)

The Professional Management Development Program (PMD) offers industrial skills training and knowledge on the timber industry to young executives and fresh graduates. The structured practical training also involves exposure to business practices in the industry.

Kursus ini dianjurkan bersama oleh MTIB, FRIM dan UPM.Peserta yang berjaya akan dianugerahkan Sijil Kelayakan (Certificate of Competency).

FITEC

F.I.T Center Sdn Bhd (FITEC) or MARA Furniture Technology Resource Center (Company Registration No 288508-T), is a company wholly owned by Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), an agency of Kementerian Kemajuan Luar Bandar dan Wilayah (KKLW) under the governing of Bahagian Pembangunan Usahawan MARA (BPU). The company was registered on 28 January 1994 under the act of Akta Syarikat 1965 and has been operating since 1995. It is located at Lot PT 6301, Mukim Batu, Off KM13, Jalan Batu Caves, 68100 Batu Caves, Kuala Lumpur. 

FITEC is created through a research done on Malaysia’s furniture industry by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA). It was financed and established with the expertise of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Malaysian government through MARA. FITEC acts as an agency that helps to develop the country’s furniture industry.

UTHM- BACHELOR OF ENGENERING (MECHANICAL-MANUFACTURING)

The course is designed to fulfill the need of the manufacturing sector in Malaysia which has grown continuously since 20 years ago. The country then was experiencing a transition from an economy based on agriculture to that based on manufacturing and thus required many manufacturing engineers. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering has contributed immensely towards producing and the development of manufacturing engineers capable of satisfying the need of the manufacturing industry.



Generally, the career of a manufacturing engineer is focused towards improving the efficiency of manufacturing processes use and management of production system, equipment and human resources in manufacturing a particular product. Today the career opportunity for manufacturing engineers has increased rapidly in facing the challenges of globalisation, the national vision 2020 and various trade agreements such as AFTA.

These challenges have further place the manufacturing sector under pressure to ensure that products produced can compete internationally, are inexpensive and of good quality. Hence, the role of manufacturing engineers is always relevant, and the faculty will always ensure that the manufacturing engineering graduates are equipped with up-to-date knowledge and tools to keep in phase with current development. A wealth of career opportunity awaits the manufacturing engineering graduate to serve in various industries.

Field Of Study - Manufacturing Engineering

The study of Manufacturing Engineering involves the selection of machines, tooling, manufacturing systems and product processing parameters. The focus of study will be in the manufacturing technology. The field of study includes :


a) Tooling for Production
The manufacturing of products requires appropriate tools. This area covers jig and fixture design, principles of tooling design such as locating and clamping. Theory of metal shearing and sheet metal bending are also introduced.


b) CAD/CAM
Computer aided design and manufacturing is a field involving the production of models and part programmes for Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines.  he principles of Coordinate Measuring Machine are also introduced.


c) Metrology and Quality Control
Metrology is a study of the science of measurement involving accuracy and traceability of measurement. Quality control taught includes aspects of statistical quality control, product quality improvement and process capbility.


d) Machining Technology and Processes
Machining technology for metals such as turning, milling and grinding is introduced. Modern machining such as the use of abrasive jet, electrical discharge, laser beam and chemical milling are also covered.


e) Other Technologies
Other technologies taught include welding, casting, metal forming and plastic moulding. Their fundamentals and methods of processing are also described.

UNIVERSITI MALAYSIA SABAH (UMS )

School of International Tropical Forestry

The school of Tropical Forestry was established in 1996. It's primary function is to train professional foresters to manage the country's rich forest resourcers as well as to further developed the wood-based industries and eco-tourism sector of the country. 
The School offers Bachelor of Forestry Science and Graduate studies on forestry related fields.

The School currently has four programs namely International Tropical Forestry, Nature Parks and Recreation, Forest Plantation and Agro-forestry and Wood Fiber Industries and Technology. Competent teaching staff specialized in various disciplines related to forestry, wood industries management, nature parks, recreation management, forestry plantations and agro forestry.



Tropical Biology and Conservation Research Institute
  • To be a research and reference center in the field of tropical biology and conservation,
  • To be a reference point for local biodiversity; to aid in management and environment impact assessments,
  • To carry out studies on tropical rainforests and freshwater ecosystems as well as the conservation of these habitats and their inhabitants,
  • To provide well-trained and skilled manpower in the fields of tropical biology and conservation through long and short-term research/training programmes and postgraduate supervision,
  • To disseminate biodiversity knowledge by organizing conferences and workshops.
Tropical Biology and Conservation Research Institute (ITBC) was founded in 1996. With the coordinating assistance of the Institute, local and international scientists can better explore the diverse terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems of the tropics, especially Sabah.
The objectives of the Institute are as follows:

  • To promote research and postgraduate training through a demand-driven education programme in the field of biotechnology;
  • To undertake strategic biotechnology research in key areas relevant to the geographical location of Universiti Malaysia Sabah;

Description:
This University was established on 24th November 1994. The ninth university in Malaysia expanded rapidly since the early days of its inception. The management office that started activities at the Ministry of Education, Kuala Lumpur later on shifted to Kota Kinabalu. Teaching and research commenced in 1995 in rented buildings. The physical development of permanent campus on a 999 acre piece of land began in earnest in August 1995. The University's occupation of the permanent campus started in 1999 and completed in 2000.

 In the meantime, the government also granted approval to UMS to set up a branch campus in the Federal Territory of Labuan. Years that followed the acquisition of building facilities for teaching, learning and research have witnessed the emergence of an increasing number of schools, centres and units. Since its birth, the development of UMS is progressing at a tremendous pace, and the university is fully committed to achieving the highest standards of quality in both academic and non-academic activities. This means pursuing continuous improvement and being satisfied with nothing less than the best practice.

Accommodation detailsStudents are offered a very supportive atmosphere while studying at UMS. The halls of residence provide a clean, comfortable and affordable environment in which to pursue studies and extracurricular activities. 
The accommodation consists of terraced houses and apartments. There are residential blocks called 'Kampung' AB, CD and E within the University campus. The rest are situated outside in three localities, all within easy driving distance. They are Kolej Kediaman Indah Permai and Kolej Kediaman Kingfisher. Each apartment/house is modestly furnished.
