Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that might help improve the effectiveness of your immune system. According to the Linus Pauling Institute, research examining vitamin C's ability to boost immunity has produced mixed results. It adds, however, that vitamin C plays an important role in the production of collagen, which is responsible for the structure of cells. Celery Seed Extract

Celery seeds are extracted from the mature celery plant and are further concentrated through extraction of the seeds. The resulting substance, explains the UMMC, has natural diuretic properties that draw water out of the tissues of your body. This effect might help decrease puffy eyes caused by the retention of water in the tissues around your eyes. Celery seed extract also has anti-inflammatory properties that might decrease swelling under the eyes. Check with your doctor before using celery seed extract because it might interact with some medications such as diuretics.

Melatonin

If you are experiencing puffy eyes due to lack of adequate sleep, melatonin might help regulate your sleep-wake cycle. The UMMC says melatonin might help people with insomnia, particularly if it is caused by jet lag or overnight shift work. Melatonin appears to restore a balanced sleep-wake cycle by helping some people fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer and be more alert when awake. Improving the quality of your sleep might help decrease the under-eye puffiness that is caused by sleep disruption.

Tissues around the eyes weaken with age, and fat that supports the eyes can migrate into the lower eyelids along with fluid, causing bags. They can also occur due to fluid retention, lack of sleep, allergies or heredity. These bags are typically just a cosmetic concern and not a symptom of a medical condition. There are herbal supplements that may help you manage these symptoms, but they may not work for everyone. Talk with your doctor before using any supplements to make sure they are safe for you to consume.

Step 1

Take a vitamin C supplement or apply a vitamin C skin lotion to your under-eye bags. According to Medline Plus, this vitamin is necessary for making collagen, which helps with skin elasticity. It is also an antioxidant, which can prevent cell damage caused by free radicals and may help fight the aging process of cells.

Step 2

Take a valerian supplement if you suffer from insomnia. MayoClinic.com states that getting enough sleep can help reduce under-eye bags, but if you are unable to sleep, a natural sleep aid may help. Valerian has been used for thousands of years to treat insomnia and anxiety, and is an alternative to prescription sleep aids. The University of Maryland recommends taking 250 to 600 mg, one to two hours before bedtime.

Step 3

Take 250 to 600 mg daily, in divided doses, of quercetin. According to the University of Maryland, quercetin contains anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce the appearance of under-eye bags. It is also an antihistamine, which helps fight allergy symptoms. MayoClinic.com says that some under-eye bags are caused by allergies.

Abstract

Maize (Zea mays L.) is the most prominent crop in the Northeast Farming Region of China (NFR), and drought has been the largest limitation for maize production in this area during recent decades. The question of how to adapt maize production to drought has received great attention from policy makers, researchers and farmers. In order to evaluate the effects of adaptation strategies against drought and examine the influences of policy supports and farmer households’ characteristics on adopting decisions, a large scale household survey was conducted in five representative maize production counties across NFR. Our survey results indicated that using variety diversification, drought resistant varieties and dibbling irrigation are the three major adaptation strategies against drought in spring, and farmers also adopted changes in sowing time, conservation tillage and mulching to cope with drought in spring. About 20% and 18% of households enhanced irrigation against drought in summer and autumn, respectively. Deep loosening tillage and organic fertilizer are also options for farmers to resist drought in summer. Maize yield was highly dependent on soil qualities, with yields on land of high soil quality approximately 1050 kg/ha and 2400 kg/ha higher than for normal and poor soil conditions, respectively. Using variety diversification and drought resistant varieties can respectively increase maize yield by approximately 150 and 220 kg/ha under drought. Conservation tillage increased maize yield by 438–459 kg/ha in drought years. Irrigation improved maize yield by 419–435 kg/ha and 444–463 kg/ha against drought in summer and autumn, respectively. Offering information service, financial and technical support can greatly increase the use of adaptation strategies for farmers to cope with drought. However, only 46% of households received information service, 43% of households received financial support, and 26% of households received technical support against drought from the local government. The maize acreage and the irrigation access are the major factors that influenced farmers’ decisions to apply adaptation strategies to cope with drought in each season, but only 25% of households have access to irrigation. This indicates the need for enhanced public support for farmers to better cope with drought in maize production, particularly through improving access to irrigation.

Abstract

Toxicity of oil sands process-affected water (OSPW) to aquatic organisms has been studied, but effects of co-exposure to OSPW and polycyclic-aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are an important class of chemicals in tailings ponds used to store OSPW, has not been investigated. The goal of the current study was to determine if organic compounds extracted from the aqueous phase of relatively fresh OSPW from Base-Mine Lake (BML-OSPW) or aged OSPW from Pond 9 experimental reclamation pond (P9-OSPW) modulated toxic potency of the model alkyl-PAH, retene, to early life-stages of Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes). Embryos were exposed to retene by use of a partition controlled delivery (PCD) system made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) until day of hatch. Incidences of pericardial edema and expression of CYP1Awere not significantly greater in larvae exposed only to dissolved organic compounds from either OSPW but were significantly greater in larvae exposed only to retene. Expression of CYP1A and incidences of pericardial edema were significantly greater in larvae co-exposed to retene and 5 × equivalent of dissolved organic compounds from BML-OSPW compared to retene alone. However, there was no effect of co-exposure to retene and either a 1 × equivalent of dissolved organic compounds from BML-OSPW or 5 × equivalent of dissolved organic compounds from P9-OSPW. While there was evidence that exposure to 5 × equivalent of dissolved organic compounds from BML-OSPW caused oxidative stress, there was no evidence of this effect in larvae exposed only to retene or co-exposed to retene and a 5 × equivalent of dissolved organic compounds from BML-OSPW. These results suggest that oxidative stress is not a mechanism of pericardial edema in early-life stages of Japanese medaka. Relatively fresh OSPW from Base Mine Lake might influence toxicity of alkylated-PAHs to early life stages of fishes but this effect would not be expected to occur at current concentrations of OSPW and is attenuated by aging of OSPW.
