Introducing New Israeli Grown Goji Berry

The Desert Agri-Research Center in Ramat Hanegev is constantly searching for new crops, which can successfully withstand the extremely harsh conditions characteristic of the arid Negev while bringing an additional advantage to the region's farmers.  This quest has led us to consider new varieties of tomatoes and peppers, or trying out unique growing methods in plant cultivation or irrigation. Occasionally, a new, previously unknown plant comes to our attention in Israel and our task is to appraise its potential.

In this way we received for our consideration the Goji berry plant (Lycium Barbarum).  The Goji is a perennial shrub belonging to the Solanaceae family that is popularly known as the wild bramble (or wolfberry) and is native to the arid regions of China and Mongolia.  The fruit, red in color and about the same size as blueberries grows in clusters from the spring to the fall. The fruit's taste reminds one of a combination of blueberries, raisins and wild raspberries. 
The Goji is a unique fruit and owes its recognition as a Super Food to its being one of nature's richest sources of anti-oxidants. According to the ORAC index issued by the USDA this fruit tops the list of food products possessing the capability to absorb free radicals, which are known to be harmful to human health. 
Traditional Chinese medicine has been using the Goji fruit and its leaves for thousands of years and it may be consumed as fresh fruit or in raisin form, as well as in drinks and ointments.  It is widely believed that the fruit can protect the liver, strengthen the immune system to increase life expectancy, improve blood circulation, lead to better eyesight, enhance sexual functioning and virility, and additional qualities.  The wonders of the Goji fruit were also discovered in the developed western countries and even became a regular part of a healthy diet in the United States and 

Western Europe since the beginning of the current millennium. The fruit has been subjected to increasing scientific research over the years and the findings have shown that 11 minerals essential for the human body in addition to a further 22 trace elements are present in the fruit.  These minerals and elements include zinc, selenium, calcium and iron (in considerable quantities), carotenoids in addition to vitamins B, C, E, and similar; and fatty acids.  These conclusions have gained considerable support based on experience.
Western dieticians and nutritionists are also of the opinion that Goji berries strengthen the immune system, improve the body's energy levels, reduce weakness and fatigue as well as suppress appetites and thereby contribute to an overall wellbeing. 
During the current year this fruit has been harvested for the first time at the Desert Agri-Research Center in Ramat Hanegev and we are now devoting considerable efforts to developing the optimum growing and harvesting methods, suitable guidelines and aiming to achieve an extended shelf-life for the fresh produce.  We are striving to produce fresh high-quality fruit which may be marketed as a specialty crop for export and for sale at health food stores.

Nowadays imported Goji fruit is available in Israel at health food stores only as dried raisins and comes in small packets. The fruit is expensive costing at least 120 NIS per Kg. The imported Goji berries and particularly those from China are sometimes of questionable quality and the level of preservatives may be less than satisfactory. We hope to see this plant being grown commercially in the Ramat HaNegev area in the near future and contributing to the range of crops growing in the fields of farmers in our region.

Agricultural Innovation in Fresh Produce

The Volcani Center has recently put on show four new varieties of citrus fruit, which were developed during its citrus fruit enhancement project.

Demand for the "Or" variety in European markets is currently very high and among the new citrus plantations in Israel "Or" tops the list.  The fruit's outstanding qualities include its choice flavor, seedless texture and how easy it is to peel. Therefore it comes as no surprise that "Or" has now become the leading citrus variety in Israel too. 

Developing a new variety of citrus fruit requires about 15 years work owing to the process' complexity and the fact that global standards for fruit increase annually. Furthermore, developments in the global market have led to increased competition in the industry and the consequent demand to produce and export new varieties from Israel. This variety was developed as part of the citrus fruit improvement project, which began about thirty years ago and constitutes the basis for the citrus industry as it is today. The "Or" variety has received high praise in tasting tests carried out in Europe. 



• "Flamingo" – Red Pomelo is a hybrid of the 'Chandler' pomelo with a hybrid of a Shamouti orange and a clementine.  This pomelo variety ripens in the period from October to December and unlike other varieties it maintains its red color when the temperature drops. The pomelo is sweet (14% sugar) and seedless and its special feature is the presence of lycopene, a red pigment considered to possess unique health advantages such as preventing cancer. 



•  "Hanna", White Pomelo is a hybrid of the 'Tahitian' and 'Chandler' pomelos. This pomelo variety, which is white inside, ripens during the period from October to December.  It is characterized by its especially sweet taste as it contains 12.6% sugar and it is seedless.  



 
•  "Einat" – Pink Grapefruit is a hybrid of the Hudson Tetrafluoride with a pomelo, which is not sour in taste.  This grapefruit variety ripens during the period from October to January and it maintains its inner pink color (lycopene) throughout all the season. It contains 11.5% sugar and its segments are seedless.  What makes this grapefruit unique is the absence of sourness.

• "Aliza" Grapefruit is a hybrid of the 'Chandler' pomelo with "Ora", an easily peelable fruit. This grapefruit variety ripens during the period from November to February and as it ripens so its inner and outer colors become orange. It contains 16% sugar and is seedless.  The fruit owes its prominence to its sweet taste and high sugar content, and these qualities earned it high marks in tasting tests. The Aliza grapefruit has the potential to dominate the global market.

Israel's Avocado Industry - Overview

The industry's size: Approximately 7,000 hectares and an expected yield of almost 
100,000 tons of fruit.

Growing areas: Along the Coastal Plain from Rosh Hanikra in the North down to the Gaza belt district. In addition, orchards may be seen in Israel's hinterland such as the Jordan Valley and the Upper Galilee (Eastern Valleys). The percentage of avocado growing along the coast is 70% while the remaining 30% grows in the Eastern Valleys; most of the avocados are grown on kibbutzim (collective settlements) while a much smaller proportion are grown by Moshavim (cooperative villages). 

Varieties by season: The avocado season opens with the Galil variety and is soon followed by Ettinger, Hass and Fuerte and Pinkerton, while Reed is picked last.
  
  
  
  
  
  

Produce ripening seasons: The Galil variety ripens in September, while Ettinger is picked from September to January, Hass from November to March, the Pinkerton variety from December to February, the Fuerte variety from November to March and finally the Reed variety from March to May. The ripening seasons vary according to the orchard's age and its geographic location. 

Description of avocado types: Hass is a black-colored avocado type and the highest in demand globally. The green varieties include Ettinger, Pinkerton, Fuerte and Reed. All avocado varieties are eaten in Israel; the Galil variety is sold in the markets already in August, while Ettinger appears on the market a month later.

Harvest size: This year's harvest is expected to reach almost 100,000 tons, most of which is earmarked for export – 70% - while the rest – 30% - is put on sale in the local market. 

Export destinations and competitors: The main export destinations are FranceUKGermany, the Netherlands and the Scandinavian countries. Furthermore, the fruit is exported to almost all the European countries and quite a large quantity goes to Russia. There is considerable global competition especially from Peru and Chile

The industry's standards: Existing European standards are maintained and these are a prerequisite for exports (Global G.A.P.). All the fruit for export must be packed at packing houses which meet the European standards.

Avocado exporting companies: The leading exporters are Galillee Export and Mehadrin Tnuport Exports Ltd. Galilee Export runs a packing house known as Milopri (Western Galilee) whereas Mehadrin Tnuport Exports Ltd. markets the avocado packed by the Granot packing house. 

Global market share: Israeli avocado has an important share of the European market and the country's geographic proximity constitutes an important advantage. The fruit can be transported by sea cargo in refrigerated containers. It takes 4-5 days for the fruit sent by ship in refrigerated containers to reach the market in Europe, whereas it takes between 10 days and two weeks for the competitors' produce to reach the same markets. 

Projects in the industry: The Ministry of Agriculture and the Volcani Institute are managing a joint project to upgrade avocado varieties and come up with varieties similar to Hass that are in greater demand globally, in contrast to the green types, for which demand is lower. Developments in pest control have led to the application of Integrated Pest Management in Israeli avocado orchards and the consequent elimination of all chemical spraying.

Abstract: Im Zuge der Reform der Gemeinsamen Agrarpolitik (GAP) nach 2013 hat die EU-Kommission vorgeschlagen, die Quotenregelung fĂĽr den Zuckersektor nach Ende des Wirtschaftsjahres 2014/15 auslaufen zu lassen. Dieser Beitrag diskutiert den Reformvorschlag und analysiert die Implikationen fĂĽr die Entwicklung der Zuckermärkte in den EU-Mitgliedstaaten sowie mögliche Auswirkungen auf die Produktion und das Einkommen landwirtschaftlicher Betriebe in Deutschland. Die gegensätzlichen Projektionen internationaler Institute und die Analyse der EU-Kommission zeigen, dass auf dem europäischen Zuckermarkt eine hohe Preisunsicherheit im Projektionszeitraum erwartet wird. Um dieser Unsicherheit Rechnung zu tragen, wurden in dem vorliegenden Beitrag zwei Szenarien fĂĽr das Simulationsjahr 2020/21 entwickelt, die mit den Angebotsmodellen des vTI-Modellverbunds ausgewertet wurden. Wobei angenommen wird, dass kein bedeutender Substitutionsprozess zu Lasten des Zuckers durch Isoglukose in der EU entsteht. Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass nach Abschaffung des Quotensystems die EU unbegrenzt Zucker exportieren kann. Dies könnte bei einem hohen Weltmarktpreisniveau fĂĽr Zucker attraktiv sein. Bei niedrigen Weltmarktpreisen ist davon auszugehen, dass der EU-AuĂźenschutz den Binnenmarkt abschirmt. Es liegt damit eine Konstellation vor, in der eine Quotenabschaffung eine Produktion in Deutschland nicht in Frage stellen wird – aber durchaus zu weiterem Strukturwandel mit einer Konzentration an den wettbewerbsfähigsten Standorten fĂĽhren wird.

Impact of a Marketing Cooperative on Cocoa Producers and Intermediaries: The Case of the Acopagro Cooperative in Peru

Abstract: Membership in an agricultural cooperative can improve the efficiency of production. Cooperatives often transfer agricultural technology to their members by employing specialized extension agents. This study analyzes the effect of cooperative membership on cocoa production and identifies factors that influence the willingness of non-member farmers to join a cooperative in the future. A survey of 243 farmers was carried out between December 2009 and January 2010 in Juanjui, San Martin, which is the main cocoa production area in Peru and the home of the Acopagro cooperative. Econometric results show that non-member farmers usually harvest larger volumes of cocoa beans, but the quality of the beans is lower compared with the Acopagro cooperative members. Analysis of a subsample of Acopagro cooperative members confirms that the length of cooperative membership has a positive effect on cocoa production volume. Moreover, unassociated farmers who wish to continue selling independently in the market have different socio-economic characteristics compared with farmers who are willing to join the cooperative in the future. The cooperative should engage in adequate training of the cooperative extension agents, thus motivating them to provide knowledge to the farmers and improve the farmers’ competitive posture in the market.

Role of Farmers' Cooperative Societies in Rural Development in Nigeria

Abstract: The study determines the role of farmers’ cooperative societies in rural development in Okrika Local Government Area (LGA) in Rivers State, Nigeria. A structured survey was conducted on a random sample of 105 farmers. Almost 90% of the respondents were members of farmers’ cooperative societies, with the highest participation (61%) registered in fishermen cooperatives. Financial assistance was the main benefit derived from membership in farmers’ cooperative societies, while fostering unity in the solution of problems was the main role of farmers’ cooperatives in rural development: both issues were identified by 100% of respondents. Additional roles included mobilization of people to participate in other rural projects and training of leaders for rural enterprises (about 75% of the respondents for each issue). Provision of agricultural extension services and strengthening of rural industries were identified as least satisfactory in the cooperative’s range of activities. The study accordingly recommends to put more effort in improvement of extension services and strengthening of rural based industries by farmers’ cooperatives.

Changes in a Kibbutz Plant's Life Cycle Induced by Cultural Change

Abstract: This is an organizational life cycle case study of a kibbutz industrial plant and its cultural features. The plant began as a new enterprise, in a new area of manufacturing magnets. Gradually, the plant evolved and grew, but socialist management problems and environmental competition interfered with its existence. The plant passed into a decline stage, and finally was shut down and acquired by a new private owner. The life cycle changes were accompanied by major changes in the plant’s organizational culture. From a socialist entity based on democratic values, it transformed into a hierarchic organization with social stratification.

Gendered Division of Labor in a Post-Privatization Moshav: A Case Study of Moshav Tzin in Southern Israel

Abstract: This study examines patterns of gendered divisions of labor in a moshav (a cooperative agricultural settlement) in the central Arava region in the south of Israel in 2011. As with Israel’s other cooperative agricultural settlements, Moshav Tzin (fictitious name) was privatized in 1989, at which time responsibility for many areas under its jurisdiction was transferred to the familial agricultural unit. Unlike other cooperative agricultural settlements, however, the remoteness of Moshav Tzin contributed to the preservation of agriculture as its main source of income. The following study investigates how the process of privatization affected the gendered division of labor in a moshav that has remained agricultural.

HOW DO WORLD AGRICULTURAL COMMODITY PRICE SPIKES AFFECT THE INCOME DISTRIBUTION IN ISRAEL?

Abstract: We assess the distributional effects of the transmission of world market price shocks for the highly import dependent economy of Israel. We combine a CGE simulation with an empirical cointegration analysis for assessing the direction and extent of the connectedness of Israeli and world market prices. The Israeli and the world market for wheat are found to be integrated. Price shocks are completely transmitted from the world market to the domestic Israeli market. We find negative effects on the amount of domestic household income, on consumption and on welfare. Regressive expenditure effects dominate progressive income effects so that the resulting domestic income distribution appears to be more unequal.
