Stress is part of daily life, but skyrocketing stress can take a toll on physical and mental health. Women -- many of whom are juggling a broad array of responsibilities -- can be under substantial pressure. Based on results of a survey published in 2010, the American Psychological Association notes that 28 percent of women reported feeling they are under "a great deal" of stress, and nearly half of women surveyed stated their stress had increased over the past 5 years. High levels of stress can cause physical, emotional and behavioral signs and symptoms in women.

Women under significant stress may experience depression, mood swings or problems with decreased self-esteem. Anxiety, anger, irritability and increased hostility toward loved ones or casual contacts commonly occur. Sadness, hopelessness and helplessness typically occur as the predominant emotional symptoms if depression develops due to chronic, high-level stress.

Behavioral changes frequently develop in women who are under extreme stress. Some women respond by eating more and gaining weight. The opposite occurs for other women under stressful conditions. Because chronic stress is a risk factor for addictive behaviors, smoking and drinking may increase, and other substance abuse may develop. Sleep patterns often go awry with stress, with some women sleeping more than usual and others finding it difficult to sleep. Many women experience poor concentration, forgetfulness and indecision when they are under stress.

Digestive system upset is common with high-level stress. In a study published in the June 2010 issue of "Industrial Health," researchers found that workers who felt they were under a high level of stress had 8 times more risk of an "irritable" stomach, compared to workers who never or seldom felt stress at work. Heartburn, diarrhea and constipation may also occur more frequently when a woman is under stress.

Stress can cause a variety of physical symptoms. Women under stress may experience pain in the back or jaw pain; stiffness in the neck, shoulder and upper back muscles; and headaches. Women under high-level stress may experience changes in their menstrual cycles or skin problems, including acne breakouts.

The authors of a 2008 review article published in the "Journal of the American College of Cardiology" examined the results of studies looking at the relationship between psychological stress and cardiovascular disease. They note that chronic stress may increase the risk for high blood pressure and heart attack. For example, women and men caring for a spouse with Alzheimer disease were found to have an increased risk of high blood pressure, according to the authors of a March 1999 article published in the "Journal of Psychosomatic Research."

A woman should see her doctor if stress is disrupting her daily life or affecting her ability to manage relationships. Feeling depressed, afraid, anxious or worried or losing interest in activities she used to enjoy may also signal high-level stress. Persistent, unexplained symptoms or difficulty sleeping should also prompt a visit to the doctor.

Abstract

This paper reports on the physical and mechanical properties and decay and termite resistance of fiberboard panels made from pine and beech treated with N'-N-(1,8-Naphthalyl) hydroxylamine sodium salt (NHA-Na), borax, and boric acid at varying loadings. The panels were manufactured using 10 percent urea-formaldehyde resin and 1 percent NH4Cl. Mechanical and physical tests demonstrated no statistically significant reduction in modulus of rupture of specimens treated with borax +NHA-Na compared to untreated control specimens. Similar results were obtained for modulus of elasticity for all treatments at concentrations of 1 percent and lower. Internal bond values of treated specimens were somewhat reduced in comparison with values of control specimens, but higher than DIN EN 622-5 standards for medium density fiberboard. Treated specimens showed increased resistance against the decay fungi Fomitopsis palustris and Trametes versicolor and the Formosan subterranean termite Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki. For individual treatments, specimens treated with borax and boric acid showed lower weight loss compared to specimens treated with NHA-Na alone. The possible synergy of borax +NHA-Na resulted in low water absorption, high modulus of elasticity, and increased resistance to decay and termites.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of certain fire-retardant chemicals on the combustion resistance of high-density fiberboard (HDF). Borax (BX), boric acid (BA), ammonium polyphosphate (APP), and alpha-x (AX) were added into the fibers made from 50% scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and 50% beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) woods at 3%, 6%, and 9% levels based on oven-dry fiber weight. HDF panels were produced in 6.5 mm thickness. HDF panels' combustion behavior was explored. To detect combustion resistance, the panels were tested according to the ASTM-E 69 and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) tests. It was determined that fire-retardant (FR) chemicals enhanced the combustion resistance of the panels to varying degrees. As a result, the FR chemicals' type and concentrations are effective for determining the combustion resistance of HDF panels.

Eggs are ideal for low-carbohydrate, high-protein breakfasts because they are carbohydrate-free with 6.3 grams of protein per large egg and 3.6 grams of protein per white. Make scrambled eggs or egg whites with vegetables like spinach, mushrooms, asparagus and/or artichoke hearts. You can increase the protein content of your breakfast further by adding lean ground turkey, diced chicken breast and low-fat cheddar cheese to your eggs. To keep your breakfast low in carbs, serve your eggs with sautéed, grated zucchini instead of hash brown potatoes.

Low-Carb Pizza

Make a pizza using a grilled portabella mushroom or a slice of grilled eggplant for the base instead of pizza crust. Cover the base with tomato paste or chopped tomatoes and basil. Add low-fat mozzarella cheese and a high-protein, carbohydrate-free topping, such as cooked chicken breast, anchovies or lean ground turkey. Add your choices of additional toppings, such as spinach leaves or bell peppers. Olives provide heart-healthy monounsaturated fats. This breakfast has about 10 to 15 grams of carbohydrates and 20 to 30 grams of protein.

Regular pancakes are high in carbohydrates and low in protein, but you can make high-protein, low-carb pancakes using cottage cheese, eggs and soy or almond flour. Top them with half a cup of berries -- and serve cooked eggs and turkey bacon on the side. A cup of low-fat cottage cheese has 6 grams of carbohydrates and 28 grams of protein. Other breakfast ideas with cottage cheese include mixing it with pecans, cinnamon and half a diced apple, or spreading the cottage cheese on celery sticks -- and then topping them with lean ham.

To make a breakfast wrap, use a low-carbohydrate tortilla or a lettuce leaf to hold the high-protein filling, which might include lean ground turkey, vegetarian bacon or breakfast sausage, low-fat cheese and cooked eggs or egg whites. Add in some low-carbohydrate greens, such as spinach leaves, kale or watercress. You might even include some small slices of avocado, which is a source of healthy, monounsaturated fats. You can also make high-protein, low-carb breakfast wraps with sardines, smoked salmon or canned tuna and low-fat Greek yogurt or cream cheese.

EFFICACY OF PYRETHROID AND BORON PRESERVATIVES IN PROTECTING PARTICLEBOARDS AGAINST FUNGUS AND TERMITE

Abstract

Pyrethroid-formulated preservatives were investigated for their efficacy in protecting rubberwood and empty fruit bunches (EFB) particleboards against fungi and termites. Timberlife®, Stoprot® and Cislin® solutions (5% w/w of particles) were incorporated in rubberwood (clone RRIM 2002), EFB and rubberwood-EFB blend (70:30) particleboards by spraying the solutions separately into the furnish during blending. Boric acid (0.5% w/w) was used for comparison. A low formaldehyde emission melamine urea formaldehyde (MUF) resin (E1 grade) was used as binder. The pressing time of each type of board was determined by studying the gelation time of the adhesive mixture with added preser vatives. With the exception of Timberlife®, all preser vatives markedly increased the gelation time of the resulting adhesive mixture. The gel time for control mixture (without preservative) was 360 s. The resistance of treated particleboards against biodeterioration agents was evaluated based on weight loss of testing blocks after exposure to white rot fungus (Pycnoporus sanguineus) and subterranean termite (Coptotermes curvignathus). The resistance of particleboards either against white rot fungus or termite can be enhanced through incorporation of small amount of pyrethroid formulated preservatives through spraying during blending of furnish. Timberlife® provided the best protection of these particleboards against P. sanguineus. Cislin® offered the best protection for EFB particleboard against termite. Stoprot® gave fair protection to all particleboards against white rot fungus and termite, while boric acid still gave the best protection to rubberwood particleboard against termite.

The influence of low styrene content on the decay resistance of an aspen wood polymer composite

Abstract 

The current study evaluated the usefulness of low styrene polymer loadings, with and without boric acid, in protecting aspen against decay by Gloeophyllum trabeum and Trametes versicolor. The styrene solution at polymer loadings of 55 percent (by weight) failed to prevent decay by Gloeophyllum trabeum but was able to prevent decay by Trametes versicolor. The pretreatment of boric acid did not improve the protection against Gloeophyllum trabeum and also reduced the protection of the wood polymer composite against Trametes versicolor. The leachability of boric acid was very high even with the styrene solution. It was concluded that at lower polymer loadings (55%) some protection is provided against white-rot fungi but not against brown-rot fungi.

Termite Resistance of MDF Panels Treated with Various Boron Compounds

Abstract

In this study, the effects of various boron compounds on the termite resistance of MDF panels were evaluated. Either borax (BX), boric acid (ABA), zinc borate (CB), or sodium perborate tetra hydrate (SPAT) were added to urea-formaldehyde (UFO) resin at target contents of 1%, 1.5%, 2% and 2.5% based on dry fiber weight. The panels were then manufactured using 12% urea-formaldehyde resin and 1% NH4Cal. MDF samples from the panels were tested against the subterranean termites, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki. Laboratory termite resistance tests showed that all samples containing boron compounds had greater resistance against termite attack compared to untreated MDF samples. At the second and third weeks of exposure, nearly 100% termite mortalities were recorded in all boron compound treated samples. The highest termite mortalities were determined in the samples with either BA or BX. Also, it was found that SPT showed notable performance on the termite mortality. As chemical loadings increased, termite mortalities increased, and at the same time the weight losses of the samples decreased.
