Nutrients to Build Muscles for the Blood Type O

The blood type diet is a system of eating developed by Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo. D'Adamo believes that your blood type determines the types of foods that are best for your body. If you have Type O blood, whether negative or positive, the blood type dictates that your body is best at digesting proteins but that you may have troubles digesting grains and dairy foods. If you are trying to build muscle mass while on the blood type diet, you can choose foods for your type that will help your body get the nutrients it needs.

Protein

When you're trying to build muscle, it's important that you get 10 to 15 percent of your daily calories from protein, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. D'Adamo's blood type diet states that people with Type O blood are most adept at digesting meat, which is a rich source of protein. Choose lean cuts of beef, lamb, veal and venison. The blood type diet suggests that followers with Type O blood avoid pork products and goose.
Carbohydrates
Your body needs carbohydrates as you build muscle mass to keep your muscles fueled and help your body store energy. Since the blood type diet suggests that anyone with Type O blood avoid many whole grains, you will need to get your carbohydrates elsewhere. Choose grains that do not contain wheat gluten, such as amaranth, barley, buckwheat and brown rice, over whole grains that are made with wheat. The diet also recommends that you avoid corn if you have Type O blood.

Fat

Your body needs fat, especially if you are trying to build muscle mass. Aim for getting from 20 to 35 percent of your daily calories from fat. Choose healthy fats, such as the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, to stick to the blood type diet. D'Adamo suggests that dieters with Type O blood consume any types of fish except for octopus, conch, caviar, smoked salmon, catfish, pickled herring and barracuda. You can add healthy fats to your diet by preparing your meals with olive oil and flaxseed oil and snacking on pumpkin seeds and walnuts.

Vitamins and Minerals

No diet is complete without the healthy vitamins and minerals found in fruits and vegetables. The blood type diet suggests that anyone with Type O blood choose vegetables from kale, romaine lettuce, broccoli, artichokes, okra, leeks, sweet potatoes, tomatoes and turnips. Avoid avocados, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, mustard greens and eggplant. Enjoy vitamin-packed fruits including plums, prunes, figs and grapefruit, but skip on melons, strawberries, oranges and coconuts.
