WASTE WOOD COLLECTION

Every year, France produces 14 million tonnes of waste wood, and the Paprec Group alone recycles 380,000 tonnes of it. But before treating it and enabling its recovery, it has to be collected effectively. Here's a rundown of the methods and tools used.

Wood, Paprec

Sources and category of wood

In France, wood recycling companies work with two main categories of supplier: industrial companies and local authorities.

The former category includes saw mills, furniture makers and supermarkets, which provide recycling factories with pallets, crates, reels and various production off-cuts.

The latter category mainly provides bulky items and mixed household waste, from selective collections. This is a source that has been growing in size in recent years, following the introduction of Éco-Mobilier certification. Éco-Mobilier is an eco-organisation created by retailers and other French manufacturers of furniture to encourage the recycling of wood.

These categories encompass three main families of waste wood :

  • class A wood: light in colour and high-quality, untreated, unpainted, unglued. This type of wood is used to make reels, for example.
  • class B wood: treated with low-concentration chemical additives to help preserve it. It might be painted and glued.
  • class C wood: treated and hazardous, including wood used to make railway sleepers.

To collect the first two categories of wood (the third is collected by specialist firms), recycling companies that deal with wood, like Paprec, place various types of containers in recycling centres or on their industrial customers’ sites. There are also standard skips for exclusively class A or B wood, sealed vacuum skips for sawdust and shavings, and mixed skips that may also contain glass, paper and cardboard. Remember that the type of skip provided depends on the customer’s desire or otherwise to sort the waste it produces at source.

Transporting wood

Once the materials are stored, the wood recycling specialists come into play.

Trucks equipped with Ampliroll removable skips are used to collect pallets, crates and mixed household waste, and transport them to the nearest wood recycling factory.

Remember that Paprec’s vehicles are 95% recyclable, consume six times less fuel than an ordinary car, and all have GPS chips so they can be located and rerouted to serve an urgent need.

In addition, the Paprec Group is increasing its use of river transport to cut its greenhouse gas emissions, one of the reasons why it was chosen to dispose of waste from the La Samaritaine construction site. The “Spirit of Future” barge alone transports as much waste as twelve trucks on each of its journeys, thus enabling the Group to prevent the production of one tonne of CO2.
