The speed of your metabolism is the rate at which your body burns fuel for energy. The main determinant of metabolic speed is not what you eat, but how much muscle mass you have, which is determined by how much you exercise. However, drinking more water can slightly boost your metabolism. Drinking lemon water is a healthy way to stay hydrated, especially while you're exercising, because it contains vitamins and electrolytes.

Water Boosts Metabolism

A study published in "Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism" in 2003 found that the metabolic rate of healthy men and women increased by 30 percent after they drank 2 cups of water. This lasted between 10 and 40 minutes after drinking the water. The scientists concluded that by boosting metabolism, drinking 8 ½ cups of water a day can cause you to burn an extra 96 calories a day. Drinking lemon water, which involves just lemon juice and water alone, would add to your daily consumption of water.

Lemons Keep You Nourished and Energized

Drinking the juice of one lemon would add only 15 calories to your diet. Despite the low calorie content, it packs a nutritious punch with 40 percent of your daily requirement of vitamin C, based on a 2,000-calorie diet. In small amounts it gives you some of the essential electrolytes that provide energy and need replacement after exercise, including potassium, magnesium, sodium and calcium.
