You may calculate the total number of calories burned from biking using a specific formula. If you bike regularly, and exercise often, you will burn fewer calories compared to someone who bikes seldom, if ever.

Formula

The formula for calculating the number of calories burned doing any exercise is [(METs x 3.5 x weight in kg) ÷ 200] x amount of time in minutes. You can calculate your weight in kilograms by dividing your weight in pounds by 2.2.

Activity Values

METs, which stands for metabolic units, is the number that represents the energy you use while biking 10 miles. The Compendium of Physical Activities Tracking Guide indicates that the METs value for biking ranges from 4.0 for a leisurely bike ride to 16.0 for riding 20 mph.

Calories Burned

If you are riding 12 mph, it will take you 50 minutes to ride 10 miles. At 130 lbs., you will burn 413 calories. If your pace is more leisurely, at about 10 mph, it could take you 60 minutes to ride 10 miles. At 130 lbs., you will burn 248 calories.
