Abstract

Several different methods have been used for isolation of lignin from wood. Only three of them, however, have been found to give a chemically essentially unchanged lignin. Extraction with organic solvents was suggested by Brauns (1939, 1952) and Brauns and Brauns (1960), and lignin samples obtained in this way are here referred to as Brauns lignins. Björkman introduced the use of a preliminary, extensive grinding, followed by solvent extraction, to give what is here referred to as milled wood lignin (MWL) (Björkman 1956, 1957, Björkman and Person 1957). Later, it was found that the amount of solubilized lignin could be increased if the finely ground wood meal was treated with hydrolytic enzymes for removal of associated polysaccharides prior to solvent extraction (Pew 1957, Pew and Weyna 1962, Chang et al. 1975). Such preparations are here referred to as cellulolytic enzyme lignins (CEL). A critical review of methods for the isolation of lignins has been published by Lai and Sarkanen (1971). The subject is also discussed in the monographs by Brauns (1952), Brauns and Brauns (1960), and Fengel and Wegener (1984).
