Bill Hylton's Ultimate Guide to the Router Table

Author

By Bill Hylton

Format: Paperback
The router is one of the most versatile tools in any shop, and router tables make it even more versatile by incorporating it into a stationary platform.

The router table opens up a whole new world of using the router that simply can't be done using it freehand. Whether you are using a commercial router table or building one from scratch, Ultimate Guide to the Router Table gives you all the information you need to use your portable router as a precision stationary machine. Basic router-table knowledge is covered in the first chapter: safety issues, setup fundamentals, feed direction and workpiece control. The following chapters cover specific operations unique to the router table. The woodworker is shown not only how to do an operation, but also why to do it in the way explained (and the pitfalls of trying to do it another way). Sidebars and tip boxes will highlight appropriate router bit choices, details on how to construct jigs that can be used in conjunction with the router table and other essential information. Illustrations and close-up photos show procedures clearly.

Simple Tables

Stage Your Space With 10 Stylish Surfaces

Author

By The Editors of Popular Woodworking

Format: Digital Download
Tables are among the most basic of furnishings – without them, we’d dine on the ground and photo books would pile at our feet. So we compiled a collection of 10 diverse tables to get you into the shop, and your plates off the floor.

Here’s what you’ll find inside:
  • Factory Cart Coffee Table Turn-of-the-century industrial chic for modern living rooms, this factory cart table is built for java and a book (but you could move a crankshaft in a pinch).
  • Contemporary Coffee Table This coffee table is sturdy and easy to build – and its angled legs make a striking statement. Add contemporary flair to your living room with this original design.
  • Game Table Checkers? Chess? Whatever your game, this little table is the perfect stage for a battle royale (and some quality time) with a friend or family member.
  • A Picnic of a Build Whether you use it outside or for whimsical (and bug-free) indoor dining, this fun, easy-to-build picnic table is a perfect project for large meals with family and friends.
  • Red Oak Coffee Table The secret to this complex-looking table? It’s super easy to build. Battens hold the top and shelf together, and screws and soda cans round out your supplies.
  • A Tapered-leg Table You always need a little table, whether it’s bedside, couchside or on an outside, covered porch. This tiny, tapered-leg table goes wherever you need it.
  • Victorian Side Table Show off your Shakespeare with an era-appropriate design. Complete with long top and a v-shaped bookshelf, this table would be at home in the Bard’s chambers.
  • Limbert Tabourette Based on a 1905 table by Arts & Crafts furniture company Charles P. Limbert Co., this compact piece assembles easily thanks to a tricky (though very doable) rabbet.
  • Nakashima-inspired Table Inspired by mid-century maker George Nakashima and a deceased backyard cherry tree, this live-edge table design brings nature indoors with a truly unique piece.
  • Shaker Trestle Table The kitchen table plays host to some of life’s finest memories. The Shakers surely understood this, and this simple trestle table adds stability to their classic design.

Coffee Tables

Coffee Tables Digital Download
In this compilation of articles from Popular Woodworking Magazine, you’ll discover the perfect style of coffee table for your home.
  • “Mid-century Coffee Table” Mario Rodriguez uses patterned veneer and simple joints for a clean mid-century, look. To build the base, you’ll learn how to lay out, rout and create loose-tenon joinery. The veneer top features a unique basket weave pattern.
  • “Prairie-style Coffee Table” David Thiel created this Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired coffee table design – an excellent exercise in cutting mortise-and-tenon joinery and developing mitered moulding skills.
  • “Coffee with the Brethren” Megan Fitzpatrick designed this Shaker-inspired coffee table that features through-drawers and turned legs – plus a simple “cheat” for what look like half-blind dovetails (when your wood isn’t thick enough).
  • “Eames-style Table” Christopher Schwarz used a cold-bending technique to create this Eames-inspired coffee table. You’ll use your band saw to cut the lamination strips, and clamps to bend them around the form.
  • “Asian Coffee Table” Christopher Schwarz uses biscuits and a solid panel top for a simple design that is Asian-inspired. Two drawers and some forged hardware complete the look.
  • “Great Danish Modern Table” David Thiel demonstrates an interesting take on dowel joinery – the table stretchers are connected to the legs with exposed dowels that enhance the Danish style.
  • “Collector’s Coffee Table” Steve Shanesy’s glass-topped coffee table is perfect for showing off your collectables. The table features tapered legs and mortise-and-tenon joinery.
