Does Brushing Your Teeth With Baking Soda Make Them Whiter?

Author
by
A toothbrush and some baking soda may make your teeth whiter. Many things stain the teeth and there are different ways to remove various types of stain. Staining can occur on the outside or inside of the tooth. No type of brushing can remove stains that have been incorporated inside the tooth. But brushing with baking soda or using baking soda toothpaste may remove surface stains on the outside of teeth.

Stains Baking Soda May Remove

Surface stains on the outside of the tooth can be caused by poor oral hygiene, tobacco, foods, beverages, medications or a combination of these. Brushing with baking soda can remove light surface staining on the teeth. Mixing water with baking soda forms a mildly abrasive paste. When used with a toothbrush, this paste combines with the action of the toothbrush to remove surface stains.

Stains Baking Soda Can't Remove

Staining on the inside of the tooth can occur from things such as too much fluoride, the antibiotic tetracycline, genetic causes or unknown events. Brushing does not get inside of the tooth and will have no effect on these types of stains, no matter what you brush with.
Stubborn surface stains, such as heavy tobacco stains, must be professionally removed by the dentist or dental hygienist at a cleaning appointment and cannot be brushed away. Cavities can also cause your teeth to stain and these stains are not affected by brushing. Stains from cavities may be white and chalky or gray, brown or black.

Baking Soda and Toothpaste

Toothpaste polishes the teeth to get them clean. Ingredients in toothpaste include fluoride to make the teeth more resistant to cavities and flavoring to provide a fresh taste. Abrasives, such as baking soda, are added to toothpaste to help remove stains and give the teeth a shine. Abrasive ingredients can cause tooth sensitivity if they are too rough on the teeth. If your teeth seem more sensitive after using a homemade baking soda paste or a commercial toothpaste with baking soda, stop using it and talk to your dentist.

Proper Brushing Technique

Brushing with baking soda or a baking soda toothpaste requires using a proper brushing technique to remove stains effectively. You should brush your teeth at least once in the morning and once in the evening with a soft toothbrush with the baking soda and gentle pressure. Aim the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gum line and use small, circular strokes. Then, roll the toothbrush toward the chewing surface of the tooth. When brushing the chewing surfaces, you can use a back-and-forth motion.

How to Get Nicotine Stains Off of Dentures

Author
by

Although dentures resemble real teeth and are equally prone to staining, they require special care and cleaning methods. Yellow and brown stains on dentures from smoking are difficult to remove with routine brushing. Light nicotine stains usually respond to home care and soaking, but heavy stains may require a professional cleaning to prevent damage.

Step 1

Place a folded bath or hand towel at the bottom of your sink to prevent your dentures from chipping or breaking if you drop them during the cleaning process.

Step 2

Rinse your dentures in warm, running water. Avoid using very hot water, as this may damage or warp your dentures. Brush them with a soft toothbrush and denture paste to remove food and other debris.

Step 3

Soak your dentures in an effervescent denture solution, which will remove most stains, including nicotine. Check the product packaging to determine how long to keep your dentures in the solution; do not soak them overnight.

Step 4

Remove your dentures from the denture cleaning solution and brush them again. Use the toothbrush to clean inside every crack, then rinse well.

Step 5

Soak the dentures in baking soda and water if nicotine stains are still present. Mix a couple of teaspoons of baking soda into a bowl of warm water and soak your dentures for 20 minutes or longer.

Step 6

Visit your dentist for a professional cleaning and whitening. Do not attempt to bleach your dentures at home, which may damage or weaken plastic and porcelain dentures.

How Do I Get Yellow Stains Out of My Nails?

Author
by

Nicotine and dark nail polishes can stain your nails yellow and are common causes of unsightly discoloration. You can also get yellow nail stains from exposing your nails to rust, paints, varnishes and other chemicals, and from fungal infections. Routine nail hygiene and home stain removal methods are usually effective at removing discoloration to give you healthy and beautiful nails.

Step 1

Scrub your nails with a nail brush and warm soapy water. Use a cleanser that contains tea tree oil if you suspect a fungal infection. Clean under the nails using a nail stick. Rinse off soap with clean, warm water.

Step 2

Combine equal amounts of warm water and 3 percent hydrogen peroxide in a small bowl for fingernails or in a large dish tub for toenails.

Step 3

Soak nails in the hydrogen peroxide solution for five minutes. After five minutes, scrub your nails with an old toothbrush.

Step 4

Rinse your nails in warm water to remove the hydrogen peroxide mixture.

Step 5

Remove remaining yellow stains by scrubbing your nails with a toothbrush and whitening toothpaste or a baking soda paste. To make the baking soda paste, combine equal amounts of baking soda and warm water.

Step 6

Rinse your nails with warm water and pat them dry using a clean towel.

Step 7

Treat nail fungus by applying an over-the-counter antifungal nail medication to the nails, following the medication's manufacturer label directions. Alternatively, as a natural home remedy, rub tea tree oil into the affected nails once a day until the fungal infection is gone. Although tea tree oil is not accepted as a nail fungal treatment by the medical community, laboratory tests show it is effective at killing a wide variety of fungi, according to a report in the "Journal of Applied Microbiology."

Step 8

Seek treatment from a licensed medical professional if home treatment does not successfully remove yellow nail stains. Fungal infections resistant to home treatment require prescription-strength medications.
