Abstract

In this study, the effects of various boron compounds on the termite resistance of MDF panels were evaluated. Either borax (BX), boric acid (ABA), zinc borate (CB), or sodium perborate tetra hydrate (SPAT) were added to urea-formaldehyde (UFO) resin at target contents of 1%, 1.5%, 2% and 2.5% based on dry fiber weight. The panels were then manufactured using 12% urea-formaldehyde resin and 1% NH4Cal. MDF samples from the panels were tested against the subterranean termites, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki. Laboratory termite resistance tests showed that all samples containing boron compounds had greater resistance against termite attack compared to untreated MDF samples. At the second and third weeks of exposure, nearly 100% termite mortalities were recorded in all boron compound treated samples. The highest termite mortalities were determined in the samples with either BA or BX. Also, it was found that SPT showed notable performance on the termite mortality. As chemical loadings increased, termite mortalities increased, and at the same time the weight losses of the samples decreased.

Abstract

The increasing use of low formaldehyde emission adhesives such as Melamine Urea Formaldehyde (MUF) for bonding particleboard and other wood composites has led researchers to find ways to improve the durability of these products against biodeterioration agents. A study on the treatment of particleboard through soaking of particles with 2% boric acid and 0.2% deltamethrin solutions was conducted. Particleboards were produced utilizing treated particles of rubberwood (clone RRIM 2002), Empty Fruit Bunches (EFB) and rubbel-wood-EFB blend (70:30). A low formaldehyde emission MUF resin (El-grade) was used as a binder. The boards were evaluated for resistance against termite and fungal attack, static bending, internal bonding and dimensional stability. The properties were compared with those of untreated boards. The results of this study showed that the resistance of El grade MUF-bonded rubberwood and EFB particleboards against white rot fungus (Pycnoporous sanguiness) and termite (Coptotermex curvignathus) can be enhanced through the proposed treatment method. The particleboards made from both rubberwood and rubberwood-EFB blend require longer pressing time (> 6 min). Boric acid offered better protection against white rot wheras deltamethrin was more effective against termite. The bonding quality of both treated rubberwood and rubberwood-EFB blend boards was inferior compared to that of untreated board. Nonetheless, all treated EFB particleboards have higher IB. The strength and stiffness properties of rubberwood and rubberwood-EFB blend particleboards for both dry and wet conditions were markedly reduced by the treatments. The treatments increased the dry MOR and MOE values of EFB boards but lowered the wet MOR and MOE values. The study also indicated that the presence of preservatives had markedly decreased the stability of rubberwood and rubberwood-EFB blend particleboards.

Progresso Soup Diet

As the saying goes, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." At least that's what the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics says about fad diets, which is what you would call the Progresso Soup Diet. Like other soup diets, the idea behind the Progresso version is that you replace your usual meals with the soup to help you lose weight. While you might lose weight following the diet, you may have a hard time keeping it off.

Progresso Diet Details

The Progresso Soup diet started as a contest created by Progresso to show that the soup could help you lose weight. The diet requires that you replace two to three of your regular meals with a can of soup. The diet does not specify which line of soups to eat. But Progresso does sell a line of light soups that contain 60 to 100 calories per serving. This diet is not meant for long-term use, according to the Progresso Soup Diet website.

How It Helps You Lose

By replacing most of your meals with a low-calorie soup, the Progresso Soup Diet helps you lose weight by restricting calories. In essence, if you replace two out of your three meals with a light soup, and eat a sensible dinner that contains 400 to 600 calories, you may be limiting your overall calorie intake to 640 to 1,000 calories a day. Limiting your intake to this extreme should only be done under the watchful eye of a doctor. Additionally, when you restrict calories to lose weight quickly, you are more than likely losing muscle and water, not fat.

Smarter Ways to Lose With Soup

Hunger can be a major setback for anyone trying to lose weight. One way to combat hunger is by filling your diet with low-energy-dense foods, which are foods that have few calories compared to their portion size. Broth-based soup is considered a low-energy-dense food. Eating a bowl of broth-based soup, such as one of the Progresso light soups, before a meal may help fill you up so you eat less of your main meal. Be aware that while soup can make a healthy addition to your diet, it is source of sodium. Read labels and track your intake to help keep your sodium intake to less than 2,300 milligrams a day.

Stop the Yo-Yo

If you want to lose weight and keep it off, it's better to lose it slowly at a rate of 1 to 2 pounds a week following a diet that incorporates healthy lifestyle changes. That means eating a variety of foods from all the food groups so that you get all the nutrients you need to stay healthy. To help keep portions, and calories, in check use smaller plates, bowls and cups. Don't skip meals, especially breakfast.

The Effects of Eating Junk Food on Exercising

If you are trying to keep up a healthy, active lifestyle you will want to eliminate junk food from your diet. If you eat it once in a while, as a “treat,” you probably won’t suffer any consequences. If junk food is your regular choice, however, or if you eat it before your workout, you might end up paying the price.

Lack of Energy

Junk food often contains high amounts of sugar, which can directly affect your energy levels. When you eat something full of simple sugars -- like a donut or a piece of candy — it immediately raises your blood sugar. You will get a quick burst of energy, but an equally quick crash not long afterward. How long the burst of energy lasts depends on your current weight, what you eat and how much. However, if your workout is an hour or two hours long, junk food is not likely to provide you with enough energy.

Gastrointestinal Upset

Junk food is heavy on your stomach and could cause indigestion, heartburn and other gastrointestinal issues. If you eat junk food before you exercise, you might end up feeling sick, especially if you go for a workout that requires a lot of jumping, twisting or moving around. For example, you might not feel too bad on the stationary bike, but try running on the treadmill or doing yoga while you’re nauseous and you might end up feeling very sick.

Lack of Definition

Junk food also tends to be high in fats as well as sugars, both of which can lead to weight gain. If you’re trying to gain muscle definition, adding fat to your body can make it impossible. Fat accumulates under the skin, on top of the muscle, so even if you exercise daily, you won’t see muscle tone until you get rid of the fat. Also, muscle growth requires protein, not fats or sugars.

Health Conditions

Junk food can lead to a number of health conditions that can affect your ability to exercise. High blood pressure, for example, is a common consequence of eating excess sodium and fats, according to MedlinePlus. Sodium and fats are commonly found in junk food. A high-intake of junk food could also lead to other health problems, including diabetes and obesity. Any medical condition you have will affect the type and amount of exercise you can perform.

How to Get a Flat Stomach Quickly without Exercise

Weight gain, bloat and gas are all factors that can attribute to a not-so-flat stomach. Exercise and proper nutrition are necessary to get rid of excess fat around your belly; however, there are a few eating strategies to get rid of bloat due to water weight and gas. Following these nutritional tips will help reduce belly bloat, giving you a flatter stomach in just a few short days.

Step 1

Pass on gas-forming foods. Most everyone knows to steer clear of fatty foods to help avoid gas, but vegetables can also be a culprit. Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower and even lettuce can cause gas buildup in the intestines. To help flatten your stomach, avoid all gas-forming foods and choose foods that are easy for the body to break down and digest like bananas, citrus, yogurt, eggs and rice.

Step 2

Lower your carb-to-protein ratio. The way you combine your foods can have a direct impact on your digestive system. Eating hard-to-digest complex carbohydrates with hard-to-break-down proteins can cause a major gas effect on your stomach. Potatoes, rice and bread are all complex carbs that need an alkaline environment for proper digestion. Proteins such as lean beef, turkey, chicken and fish need an acidic environment to break down properly. When you combine these two types of foods, it is very hard on the digestive system and can cause excess air to trap in the intestines, causing gas bloat. To get a flat stomach, eat your proteins with easier-to-digest carbohydrates like asparagus, zucchini, squash and tomato.

Step 3

Skip the salt. Eating foods high in sodium and adding table salt to your food causes your body to retain fluid. Water-weight retention makes you appear puffy, especially in the stomach. According to the Mayo Clinic, the main source of sodium in the average person's diet comes from 77% processed foods. If you love the salty over the sweet, pick foods that are fresh and have natural sodium levels to curb your cravings. Carrots, cucumbers and cantaloupe are some foods that will help satisfy salt cravings without packing on fluid retention.

Step 4

Stay hydrated to keep your belly flat. Fluid retention, water weight, is caused by not drinking enough water. Also, by replacing other beverages with water, you cut out unwanted calories, caffeine and sodium, which cause bloat and weight gain. To prevent water retention, drink a minimum of eight 8-oz. glasses of water a day.

Stages of Early Childhood Brain Development

Overview

Children go through an amazing transformation in the earliest years of their life, from a helpless infant to a walking, talking toddler, and on to reading, critical thinking and advanced social interactions in a school setting. Understanding the stages of early childhood brain development can help ensure that parents and educators provide an effective environment for successful emotional, academic and cognitive growth.

Prenatal Development to Birth

Before birth, the basic framework of a child's brain develops, but like the framing of a house without walls or roof, the development is far from complete. By the time a baby is born, her brain contains about 100 billion neurons, or brain nerve cells, reports the University of Maine Cooperative Extension human development specialist Judith Graham. The arrangement of these neurons during prenatal development is primarily determined by heredity, but the configuration of the brain at birth is just the starting point. The brain nerve cells at birth are mostly not connected to one another yet, explains Missouri State Extension human development specialist Sara Gable.

Birth to Age 3

From birth to age 3, the human brain builds what Sean Brotherson, family science specialist at the North Dakota State University Extension, calls a "functional architecture" of neural networks. The unconnected neurons present in the brain at birth begin to connect with one another. Sensory experiences--sounds like voices and music, smells like cooking and the family's pet dog--cause brain nerve cells to signal one another, and those signals form synapses, or pathways of connection. From infancy to around age 3, the brain forms around 1,000 trillion synapses in response to environmental stimuli like sights, sounds and tastes, with repeated stimuli forming the strongest neural connections, Brotherson reports. This is about twice the number found in the average adult brain.

Age 3 to Age 11

From age 3 to around age 11, the brain remains a dense network of neural connections, hungrily responding to new learning experiences. Language, vision, emotions and fine motor coordination all continue to emerge and develop richer complexity during this time period. Learning a second language as well as skills like drawing and playing an instrument are easiest during the first decade of life, according to the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, because the brain's dense neural network is at its most receptive.

From 11 On

Starting at age 11, a child's brain begins to prune away the unused neural networks, explains Brotherson of the North Dakota State University Extension. The most utilized neural pathways remain and become a permanent part of the adult brain architecture, but little-used networks vanish. The remaining networks are stronger and more efficient than the dense, more complex networks of earlier childhood.

What Are the Symptoms of Stress Headaches?

Overview

Stress headaches, also known as tension headaches, can be caused by a variety of reasons: heredity, tightening muscles in the neck and scalp, and stress. Some people suffer from chronic stress headaches, where they occur almost daily and begin almost immediately during a stressful event. While stress headaches may seem like other headaches, stress headache sufferers can also have other symptoms.

Headaches

Besides the stress headaches that occur anytime during the day, some will also experience headaches when they wake up in the morning. These morning headaches resemble the intensity of other headaches, but some people may also feel dizzy on occasion.

Muscle Aches

Some people who have stress headaches also have general muscle aches. While these muscle aches can occur anywhere in the body, they most commonly occur in the neck, where the muscles tighten during the headache.

Sleep Problems

Stress headaches are accompanied by sleep problems. Sufferers have problems falling asleep at night and staying asleep, which can lead to chronic fatigue. These sleep problems can be worse if the stress headaches occur later in the day.

Irritability

Irritability is also a symptom that is associated with stress headaches. The irritability can be caused by the constant headaches, the sleeping issues and the muscle aches.

Concentration

Especially during a stress headache, concentrating can be impaired. Issues with concentration can be temporary or can become chronic if the headaches go untreated.

Sensitivity

Other stress headache sufferers may notice a mild sensitivity to either light or noise. This sensitivity occurs mostly during the stress headache, though it can also happen between headaches.
