Popular Woodworking Magazine, June 2014

The Bill Anderson Woodworking Collection – Limited Quantity Available!

Format: Magazine Single Issue

Other available formats: MAGAZINE DOWNLOAD
Christopher Schwarz’s clever and simple technique for eye-catching “riveted” joinery is the cover article for the June 2014 issue. While Chris used the approach on a campaign furniture piece, a little touch of brass will add shine to any project – and it’s simple to achieve.
In “Contemporary Cabriole Legs,” you’ll discover Jeff Miller’s take on a classic form, updated for modern use – plus a slick trick with a router to quickly flush the top of legs with a table’s apron. In “Get a Handle on Mortise Chisels,” Willard Anderson and Peter Ross share their crazy (but cool) technique for rehandling oval bolstered mortise chisels (hint: it involves fire).
Glen Huey shares his techniques for making box joints at the table saw in his “Hardware Hideaway” build – a piece inspired by a pricey find in an antique mall. It’s a great-looking piece for storing your shop bits and bobs – but it would be equally at home in the kitchen of office – or anywhere else you have small items to sort and store. Inspired by both Wharton Esherick and nature, Chuck Bender walks you through the design and planning process, and then the build, of a graceful stool. And Peter Follansbee teaches you to carve spoons – all it takes is a few tools and “found” wood.
In this month’s Tool Test, we review the Nova Comet II Midi Lathe, Blue Spruce Toolworks Joiner’s Mallets and Grobet Cabinetmaker’s Rasps. In Woodworking Essentials, Megan Fitzpatrick boils sharpening systems into the three basic things you need to know, Bob Flexner shares fixes for a baker’s dozen of finishing problems in Flexner on Finishing. And in End Grain, David Wiggins shares his essay on woodworking coming full circle.
Plus Tricks of the Trade, reader letters and more.

Romantic Things to Do in Gatlinburg & Pigeon Forge

The area around Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee is a haven for tourists looking for a taste of the rich history and southern culture of the Smoky Mountains. Attractions including the amusement park of Dollywood make this a hotspot for family vacations -- but couples will also find romantic places to tuck away.

Natural Beauty

The cities are located adjacent to the entrances to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where plenty of quiet solitude and enjoyment of nature await. A romantic way to while away an afternoon is to hike to any number of waterfalls in the park. One well-traveled destination is Laurel Falls, an 80-foot waterfall requiring a 2.6-mile hike from Sugarlands Visitor Center in Gatlinburg. Also worth visiting -- and less-visited -- is Rainbow Falls, located along a moderately-difficult, 5-mile hiking trail accessible from Gatlinburg. A handful of other waterfalls are located nearby; the Great Smoky Mountains National Park website offers detailed directions.

Pampering for Two

Once you've hiked to your heart's content, you may need a little relaxation. A number of spas offer couples massage or romantic couples experiences, including the Spa at Bear Mountain, the Spa at Bear Cove Falls and Beneficial to Life Therapeutic Massage, a service that will travel to your location. The Spas, both located in Pigeon Forge, also have a couples suite with a fireplace and a full bath.

A Dinner Experience

When it's time to eat, you'll find a host of restaurants to choose from -- but your night doesn't have to include just dinner. Dinner theaters abound in the area, with shows that focus on everything from Southern culture to the top hits of the '50s, '60s and '70s. Start your evening off with a visit to the tasting room at the Mountain Valley Winery in Pigeon Forge, and then head onto experience the southern culture show, Dixie Stampede, the classic songs of the Smith Family Dinner Show or the raucous Lumberjack Feud Dinner Show.

Tuck Away at Night

A big part of a romantic getaway is finding the perfect accommodations. While you will find any number of hotels and campgrounds in the area, perhaps the quietest and most private way to stay in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge is to rent a rustic cabin. Ideally, you'll find one in a quiet wooded area with its own hot tub. Some rental agencies will also provide you with a "romance" package that includes champagne, and sometimes even breakfast or dinner delivered to your door. Even if it's not officially a "honeymoon," check out the honeymoon cabin rentals offered at Elk Springs Resort or Honeymoon Hills -- both of which offer heart-shaped hot tubs in select cabins. Also track down rental agencies through the area's visitor guides and ask the staff about romance or honeymoon packages.

How to Eat Cinnamon to Lower Blood Sugar While on Diabetic Medicine

Although a sprinkle of cinnamon on your breakfast cereal may not be an effective tool for lowering glucose levels, cinnamon extract, taken in capsule form, might improve blood glucose levels. Taking at least 1g, but no more than 6g of cinnamon daily might reduce fasting glucose levels by almost 30 percent and reduce triglyceride levels and total cholesterol levels as well.
Because cinnamon may have a drastic effect on your diabetes, always consult your doctor before adding cinnamon to your diet as part of your diabetes treatment plan. Monitor your blood sugar levels closely, as you may have to decrease your diabetes medication.

Step 1

Use cassia cinnamon, the most common variety sold in the U.S. -- although it's grown in Central America, Indonesia and China -- rather than Ceylon cinnamon.

Step 2

Add cinnamon to your diet gradually. Start with 1g daily and take it gradually throughout the day, rather than taking it all at once. Record your glucose levels and note any changes to discuss with your doctor. Do not stop or alter your current diabetes medications without consulting your physician.

Step 3

Gradually increase the amount of cinnamon in your diet, constantly monitoring your glucose levels. Researchers are not sure why cinnamon affects glucose levels, and several studies have shown mixed results. Diabetes Health reports that "data regarding cinnamon’s efficacy in reducing glucose levels in patients with diabetes is inconsistent at best."

Abstract

The paper analyzed genetic parameters of 144 progenies of selected clones of Populus deltoides Bartr. ex. Marsh growing at the farm of WIMCO Seedligs Ltd., Bagwala, Rudapur (Uttarakhand), India, on the basis of growth traits viz. diameter at breast height (DBH) and height and wood traits namely fiber dimensions, vessel dimensions, proportion of tissues of secondry xylem, specific gravity. Progenies showed significant variations for all growth and wood traits. Broadsense heritability for wood traits ranged from 0.84 (fibril angle)—0.04 [vessel (%)] while for growth traits it was 0.88 (DBH) and 0.02 (height). Fiber length, fiber diameter, wall thickness, fiber (%), fibril angle and specific gravity were important wood traits showed 0.60, 0.72, 0.29, 0.40, 0.84 and 0.68 broadsense heritability respectively. The genetic advance was higher for vessel length (81.49) followed by fiber length (74.72), vessel diameter (10.16), fibril angle (9.81) and fiber (6.07 %). Genetic gain was higher for parenchyma (51.70 %) followed by fibril angle (31.42), fiber (17.70 %), ray (15.89 %), vessel length (15.44), wall thickness (13.65), specific gravity (11.84) and fiber length (6.48) for the wood traits. Genetic advance was 6.71 and 0.58 respectively for DBH and height for growth traits while genetic gain for DBH and height was 28.16 and 2.23. Cluster analysis indicated that 139 progenies were clustered in three clusters showing narrow genetic base of the species. However, the progenies B-13, seedling-S and 86-1 were divergent and also showed better wood and growth traits adjudged the best progenies for further development of new clones and hybrids. Moreover, 32 progenies were also showed better wood and growth traits and may also be used in tree improvement programs of the species. The hybridization among the progenies selected from diverse clusters could produce greater heterosis needed for higher growth and suitable for products.
