Unique approach to formalize the impact of immersive tools on the intrinsic activity of design.

Definition of a model comparing the traditional design process to the immersive process.
In between industrial design, virtual reality and experience psychology we aim to offer engaging and efficient immersive tools to augment the design workflow. To evaluate the efficiency of our innovative design tools and their impact on the traditional industrial design process, we use experimental protocols inspired from design science, user experience evaluation and psycho-physiology. This research framework gives access to complex micro processes appearing between the designer and his tools, regarding the emotional engagement of a designer in his activity. The goal of this paper is to present how specific early design needs can be fulfilled by immersive technologies. The presented findings show the level to which an immersive experience is valid for early design tasks.

The intention of this paper is to place in context the importance of end-user research in a time of great uncertainty about the impact of the workplace revolution on employees. It aims to anticipate what the future holds and how designers may respond accordingly. The paper focuses on a research project which examined the responses of office users to various aspects of interior environment. Conclusions refer to the value of end-user research in establishing significant environmental factors and highlights the need for designers to respond to privacy, storage and appearance of furniture in workplaces.

Abstract
The increasing share of intermittent renewable energy on the grid encourages researchers to develop demand-side management strategies. Passive heat storage in the indoor space is a promising solution to improve the building energy flexibility. It relies on an accurate control of the transient building temperature. However, many of the current numerical models for building energy systems assume empty rooms and do not account entirely for the internal thermal inertia of objects like furniture. This review article points out that such assumption is not valid for dynamic calculations. The furnishing elements and other internal content can have a significant impact on the indoor thermal dynamics and on the occupants’ comfort. There is a clear lack of guidance and studies about the thermo-physical properties of this internal mass. Therefore, this paper suggests representative values for the furniture/indoor thermal mass parameters and presents the different available modelling technics. In addition, the large exposed surface area of furniture pieces offers a good potential for the integration of phase change materials. It can highly increase the effective thermal inertia of light frame buildings without any construction work.
