Negative Effects of Cigarette Smoke or Second-Hand Smoke


Overview

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), smoking is the leading preventable cause of death. The CDC reports that, on average, a smoker dies 13 to 14 years earlier than non-smokers; they die from cancer, heart disease, and lung diseases such as emphysema, chronic airway obstruction and bronchitis. Beyond health effects, there are negative effects including financial and social factors. Furthermore, smoking does not just affect the smoker; secondhand smoke negatively affects family, friends and associates.

Health Effects

Cigarette smoke and secondhand smoke, not surprisingly, have negative effects on one's health. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) reports that 438,000 deaths are attributed to cigarette smoking each year; an additional 38,000 deaths are caused by secondhand smoke. According to MedlinePlus, an online medical encyclopedia associated with the National Institutes of Health, cigarette smoke has the potential to harm nearly every organ in the body. A staggering 87 percent of lung cancers would disappear if every person in the U.S. stopped smoking. The NCI reports that smoking is linked to multiple other types of cancer, including cervix, bladder, kidney, pancreas, mouth and throat. Cigarette smoking also causes severe damage to the heart and the cardiovascular system. The American Heart Association (AHA) reports that smokers are two to three time more likely to die from coronary heart disease compared with nonsmokers. Smoking and secondhand smoke puts the birth of healthy children at risk by causing infertility, preterm delivery, stillbirth, low birth weight and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), according to the CDC. Smoking also has negative cosmetic effects, such as tar-stained teeth and yellow-tinted skin.

Social Effects

Smoking can have negative social effects as well. Non-smokers generally try to avoid inhaling secondhand smoke; thus smoking may serve as a social barrier. Smoking is also banned indoors in many places. An article published by CNNhealth.com by Theresa Tamkins in September 2009 indicates that 32 states have some type of smoking ban that prohibits smoking in public places and/or buildings. Many European countries have similar bans, including England, Scotland, France, Ireland, and Norway, according to the CNNhealth.com article. These types of bans can have pervading negative social effects, isolating the smokers outside and away from the group.

Financial Effects

The negative effects of cigarette smoke have a detrimental financial effect, both on the smoker and the family. The high price of cigarettes these days make a significant dent in the family's finances. Additionally, smokers tend to have more health problems that cost money to medically treat. Smoking also costs the general public money: the CDC estimates that cigarette smoking costs the U.S. more than $193 billion, including money in lost productivity (due to illness and death), and money used for health care that the smoker is unable to pay for himself. Secondhand smoke also has negative financial effects: the health costs for secondhand smoke-related illnesses cost an estimated $10, according to the CDC.

Do Pushups or Sprinting Make Your Heart Beat Faster?

Pushups and sprinting are effective exercises comprised of aerobic and anaerobic elements. Though you may think of pushups as pure strength training, your heart rate increases significantly when performing a pushup routine. Sprinting can help develop your strength while providing an intense cardiovascular workout. While there is no definitive rule for which exercise causes the heart rate to raise more, sprinting is typically a more challenging cardiovascular exercises.

Exercise Intensity

The intensity of exercise has a great impact on heart rate. Naturally, more intense exercises raise the heart rate more significantly than less intense exercises. Exercise intensity can be measured as a combination of pace and the weight load that is to be moved. While this is not a scientific formula, nearly every type of physical exercise consists of these two elements, save isometric exercises, which are performed in a static position. Whether you consider an exercise intense depends on your fitness level and how exhausted you feel after performing the exercise.

Pushup Mechanics

The pushup requires you to push your body weight up using your arms, chest and shoulders, as well as your core muscles to help stabilize your body. This maneuver is generally performed at a slow to moderate pace. It is not necessarily the pace of the pushup that raises your heart rate, but rather the amount of stress placed on your muscles. You may notice that your heart rate rises even if the exercise is performed at a slow pace. The pushup is a strength exercise that primarily relies on your anaerobic system and not your cardiovascular system. While your heart rate increases during a pushup, the increase is typically less than during a sprint.

Sprinting Mechanics

Sprinting entails moving your arms and legs backward and forward vigorously. The amount of energy required to propel yourself forward as fast as you can taxes your system quickly. Your heart rate increases nearly immediately after starting a sprint to deliver the oxygen your body requires. In general, sprinting increases the heart rate faster and higher than pushups, depending on the distance you sprint and the level of your maximum heart rate at which you are performing. Sprinting stresses cardiovascular fitness, which tends to make the heart work harder than during pushups.

Target Heart Rate

You should aim to exercise in your target heart rate zone when doing exercises that are primarily aerobic. Your target heart rate is calculated by first figuring your peak heart rate. For women, peak heart rate is calculated by subtracting 88 percent of the age from 206. For men, the age is subtracted from 220. Effective aerobic exercising requires that you work out at 65 to 85 percent of your peak heart rate. Speak with your doctor before engaging in strenuous physical activity to ensure you are healthy enough to exercise in your target heart rate.

A study of conventional agroforestry practices and opportunities in the highlands of Oromia, Central Ethiopia

Abstract

Informal and formal surveys were conducted at Jeldu and Guder district in two peasant associations (PA) of western Shewa zones of Oromia region in 2006/2007. The study were conducted with the objectives to describe and understand indigenous agroforestry practices and identify constraints for natural resources management and propose research agenda in the context of farming system. Informal surveys were implemented through discussion, key informant interview, and physical observation. And formal survey was conducted using structured questionnaires from one hundred households (50 per district). The common agroforestry practices recorded at both study sites were scattered trees on farmlands, trees on gullies, rivers, home gardens, live fence, grazing lands, farm boundaries and around fences. Hagenea abyssinica, Dombeya torrida, Maytenus ugalinesses, Eucalyptus globulus and Buddleja polystacha are abundant at Jeldu where as Acacia abyssinica, Cordia africana, Croton macrostachys, Olea africana, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Cupressus lusitanica, Podocarpus glaciliar, Entada abyssinica, Ficus vasta, Sesbania sesban, Albizia scimperiana, Vernonia amygdalina, Acacia decurrense, Celtis africana, Croton macrostachys and Myrica salicifolia are familiar at Guder.Free livestock movement, land shortage, poor access of tree seedlings and termite hazard are the major bottlenecks recorded outside homesteads. Soil erosion, feed shortage, wood shortage and depletion of soil fertility are the critical problems in the study areas. Investigation of feed value and soil improving characteristics are some of the potential indigenous trees and shrubs need a priority research attention. Hence this paper discussed the causes of the aforementioned problems and forwarded relevant recommendation research intervention to be conducted.

Influence of prolonged exposure of wood to water on wood structure and biochar properties

Abstract

The structural changes of birch and pinewood under the influence of prolonged exposure to water were studied. It has been shown that prolonged aqueous treatment of birch increases the degree of crystallinity of cellulose. On the contrary, similar treatment of pinewood leads to its decrease. The specific role of hydroxyl groups of cellulose in the interaction of wood with water has been revealed. It has been noted that the O/H ratio for wood correlates to the hydrophilicity and crystallinity of cellulose. The possibility of producing porous products from different species of wood after prolonged soaking in water has been shown. The carbonization of the samples up to 800 °C leads to significant growth of the specific surface area of carbon product from 10–20 to 200–400 m2/g. It is assumed that a soft change of wood structure under the influence of water leads to the formation of weakly bound low molecular weight fragments, which are converted into volatile products for carbonization, and the formation of porous carbon product.
