Why Is Lifetime Fitness Important?

Lifetime fitness gives you mental and physical benefits. According to "Fitness" magazine, exercise provides a positive boost to the immune system, which can help ward off colds and it activates the release of serotonin and dopamine in the brain, which can improve a person's mood. If you are someone who wants to improve your overall health it is necessary to know the importance of lifetime fitness.

Better Mental Focus

Lifetime fitness can offer better mental clarity. The Centers for Disease Control says that regular physical activity can help keep your thinking, learning, and judgment skills sharp as you grow older. According to Sophia Breene of the Huffington Post, being physically fit can also improve a person's mental alertness and the ability to plan and organize by increasing blood flow and oxygen to the brain. To reap the benefits of fitness, it is recommended that adults aged 18 to 64 receive 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week.

Improves Cardiovascular Health

It is essential for people to achieve lifetime fitness because they can develop a healthier body from the inside out. One way that being physically fit can help you gain a healthier body is by improving cardiovascular health. Health.gov states that with regular exercise, young adults and older adults are able to lower their risks of heart attack, stroke, decrease their resting heart rate and improve endurance levels. Also, according to Dr. Jonathan Myers of the Palo Alto Health Care System, by improving cardiovascular health a person will be less likely to become obese and may have increased longevity. For better cardiovascular health you can perform aerobic exercises, such as jogging, yoga, running or swimming.

Reduces Stress Levels

Lifetime physical fitness can decrease your anxiety levels and can promote relaxation; it encourages relaxation because during bouts of physical activity the body releases endorphins -- a neurotransmitter -- from the pituitary gland and hypothalamus, which are located in the brain. According to Harvard Medical School, endorphins are the body's natural pain reliever and can produce a calming, soothing effect. Health Matters of Idaho states that by keeping stress levels down you will be able to prevent certain illnesses and be able to increase your energy level, allowing you to spend more quality time with friends and family.

Strengthens Muscles

Individuals who exercise can gain an increase in their muscle tone and strength. According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, strengthening the body's muscles is important for lifetime fitness because healthy muscles let your body move freely and keep your body strong. To strengthen muscles you can use strength-training machines and free weights. Some of the most effective exercises that increase strength and muscle tone are squats, lunges, bicep curls, tricep kickbacks and abdominal crunches.
