You need to burn more calories than your body consumes in order to lose weight. Foods contain varying amounts of calories, and meals that are high in fat and sugar contain more calories. Leek soup is a low-fat and nutritious meal that can be prepared in a number of ways. Please check with your doctor if you are serious about losing weight. She will be able to advise the best weight loss plan for you.

Benefits

Leeks are a part of the lilliacea vegetable group that are rich in phytochemicals, writes George Pamplona-Roger in his book "Foods That Heal." They contain powerful antioxidants which help fight off free radicals in the body. Pamplona-Roger also notes that leeks, as well as onions and garlic, may help prevent cancer and coronary disease. Their piquant taste comes from the fact they are rich in sulfur.

Effects

Leeks have special benefits when it comes to losing weight. They may help to reduce cholesterol, since they are full of fiber content. They contain a special type of fiber which will prevent constipation and intestinal gases. Healthy fiber is a necessary part of a weight-loss diet plan. Since leek soup is in liquid form, this helps the body to retain the nutrients without absorbing excess fat as easily.

Recipe

In the book "The Miami Mediterranean Diet: Lose Weight and Lower Your Risk of Heart Disease," Michael Ozner, M.D. suggests a low-fat leek soup recipe for losing weight. It contains around 144 calories per serving and 10 g of total fat. Chop 2 lbs. of leeks with two fennel bulbs and 2 lbs. red potatoes; saute in 1 tbsp. olive oil. Add broth and bring to a boil. Simmer for 20 minutes then add 2 oz. of sliced lox and salt and pepper to taste.

Method

Mireille Guiliano suggests a method of losing weight with leek soup in her book "French Women Don't Get Fat." Chop 2 lbs. of leeks and place in a large pot. Cover with water and let it simmer for 20 minutes. Strain the liquid and remove the leeks, placing them in a bowl. Drink one cup of the soup every two to three hours. Whenever hungry, serve the chopped leeks with extra virgin olive oil and lemon juice, alongside a lean piece of fish or meat. Do this for a few days, and add a few vegetables and fruit to the meal.

Warning

To lose weight, eat three low-fat meals a day and exercise. Different recipes of leek soup can be a part of those meals. Skipping meals fails in the long run, as often the weight you lose will just be gained right back. Eating lean proteins, vegetables and whole grains is also a vital part of a healthy diet; leek soup alone does not provide complete nutrition. Physical activity can also help you to burn calories. Remember to check with your doctor if you are experiencing any health concerns.
