Summary

The EEC-ordinances to set-aside agricultural land apply to Belgium. They include afforestation with fast-growing trees. Taking into account the level of the set-aside premiums, the interest of the farmers will (at present) be limited to the wet (drainage class e) and the very wet (drainage class f) soils: the former are very well suited for growing poplars while the latter are especially suited for alder and willow and to a certain extent also for poplar.

The soils suitable for afforestation can be quantified by means of the detailed soil data bank which has been developed at the National Institute of Agricultural Engineering at Merelbeke by the Working Group for the Inventory of Waterlogged Soils in Flanders (under the auspices of the Flemish Community).

Résumé

L'ordonnance de la C.E.E. concernant le retrait des terres arables sont aussi de rigueur en Belgique et prévoit entre autres la reconversion en forêts à croissance rapide. Vu le niveau de la prime d'arrêt de culture, l'intérêt des agriculteurs sera probablement limité aux terres humides (classe de drainage e) et très humides (classe de drainage f), les premiers sont aptes à la culture du peuplier et les dernières à la culture de l'aune et du saule et plus au moins du peuplier.

Les terres aptes à la sylviculture peuvent être quantifiées à l'aide de la banque de données des sols qui à été rédigé par le Groupe de Travail pour l'Inventarisation des Terres Humides en Flandre (sous les auspices de la Communauté Flamande) établi à la Station de Recherches du Génie Rural de l'Etat à Merelbeke.
