ANALYSIS OF INTEGRATION BETWEEN QUEENSLAND FEED AND MALTING BARLEY MARKETS

Abstract: Barley can be differentiated into feed and malting barley based on its end-use markets. Substitutability both in supply and in demand complicates analysis of price information in the barley market. The paper examines the price linkages between feed and malting barley in the Queensland barley market by using cointegration and error correction models. Malting barley prices respond to restore equilibrium relationships with corresponding feed barleyprices in the long run, but not vice versa. Thus there appears to be a price leadership role for feed barley, and one-way substitutability and quality differences in the barleymarket.

Effects of tied ridges and mulch on barley (Hordeum vulgare) rainwater use efficiency and production in Northern Ethiopia

Abstract: Two alternative in situ area rainwater conservation practices (tied ridging and mulching) were evaluated for four seasons (2004, 2007, 2008 and 2009) at an experimental station in Mekelle, Ethiopia. The objectives were to evaluate the performance of barley as influenced by mulch and tied ridge and to understand the relationships of rainfall and runoff on barley fields. About 16-30% of the seasonal rainfall resulted in runoff when barley was grown without water conservation, whereas the in situ conservation practices resulted in significantly low runoff. Tied ridging and mulching increased the soil water in the root zone by more than 13% when compared with the control. Consequently, grain yield and rainwater use efficiency increased significantly with tied ridging but not with mulching. Tied ridging increased the grain yield over the control at least by 44% during below average rainfall years. Neither mulching nor tied ridging were significantly different from the control when the seasonal rainfall was above average. Since rainfall is often unreliable, we recommend tied ridging as a water conservation technique for loams in the study area in order to mitigate the effect of drought stress in barley. However, tied ridges could be carefully opened when excess water is expected to cause waterlogging.

Test of AquaCrop model in simulating biomass and yield of water deficient and irrigated barley (Hordeum vulgare)

Abstract: With the current water shortage in East Africa improving crop water use is vital especially in the arid and semi-arid regions of Ethiopia. To understand the response of barley to water and to simulate the biomass and grain yield of barley under various water inputs and planting dates, we tested the FAO AquaCrop model versions 3.0 using independent data sets during the cropping seasons of 2006, 2008 and 2009 at Mekelle site in northern Ethiopia. We found that the model is valid to simulate the barley biomass and grain yield under various planting dates in the study site. AquaCrop model can be used in the evaluation of optimal planting time. Out of the tested planting dates, planting on July 4 (early sowing) was found to maximize barley biomass, grain and water use efficiency. The model can also be used in the evaluation of irrigation strategies. Barley showed slightly lower performance under mild water stress condition compared to full irrigation condition. However, the model has indicated the possibility of obtaining more biomass and grain yield from a relatively larger barley field under (deficit irrigation) mild stress condition.

SUPPLY-SIDE RISKS AND MALTING BARLEY PROCUREMENT AND STORAGE

Abstract: U.S. production of six-rowed malting barley has declined sharply over the last several years. Further, the quality of U.S. malting barley has suffered repeatedly due to disease. This has left the U.S. malting industry dependent on a single-desk seller of malting barley, the Canadian Wheat Board. In this paper, we develop a discrete stochastic programming model to analyze the procurement and storage decisions of the U.S. malting industry. We employ the model to investigate the impact that various sources of risk have on the industry's reliance on imported barley. The results indicate strategies that mitigate dependence on imports.

Types of inheritance agronomic characters of F1 hybrids spring barley in the Amur region

Abstract: The article presents the results of analysis of the degree of phenotypic dominance of spring barley hybrids of the first generation. Experience was founded on the basis of the research laboratory breeding of crops VPO Far Eastern State Agrarian University (Blagoveshchensk) in 2013-2014. F 1 hybrids were sown by hand in rows 0.9 m long; as standard were parental forms. Harvesting is done by hand (with the root system). Biometric analysis was performed in the laboratory. Most of us studied hybrids heterosis appears simultaneously on two grounds 2; two hybrid combinations at this stage can be attributed to not very promising from the economic point of view, as they have the inheritance of agronomic traits of F 1 hybrids passed by the type of depression (which Alexis х Talovskiy 9 and Simon x South). Only one hybrid surpassed their parental forms at the same time on a 5-featured Alexis х Simon, what it says about the value and necessity of careful further study.

Development of an efficient Tissue Culture after Crossing (TCC) system for transgenic improvement of barley as a bioenergy crop

Abstract: We have developed a protocol for rapid generation of barley plants with introduced genes by employing techniques of tissue culture, plant regeneration and crossing. Compared to conventional protocols, the time between pollination of T0 plants and identification of phenotypic expression in the T1 generation is reduced from around 17–9weeks. All of the selected candidates after the tissue culture screening exhibited phenotypic expression. Furthermore, by utilizing ordinary pollen crossing, we demonstrated a route for introduction of genes to a recalcitrant barleyelite cultivar. This Tissue Culture after Crossing (TCC) procedure significantly enhances the prospects for producing transgenic barley lines from desirable germplasm. We suggest that the TCC method will contribute to improve barley as a promising bioenergy crop.

Models for the Analysis of BarleyMarketing

Abstract: Barley marketing, like a number of other commodities in Australia, is subject to the requirements of the Hilmer reforms. Approaches to the analysis of the possiblederegulation of barely marketing are considered. Emphasis is placed on the use of a spatial equilibrium model designed to assess the consequences of different degrees of market power exerted over the export and domestic markets and econometric techniques designed to assess the extent that prices in different export markets differe from what might be expected without exerting market power. Results are obtained which illustrate the fact that rents can be extracted from markets if market power can be exerted and they also provide information on the distribution of the rents. It is also observed that the Japanese import policy has a significant impact on the ability of Australia to extract price premiums.
