How to Cook Brown Pasta

If you love pasta but prefer not to eat white flour or can't because it contains gluten, then you may want to try brown-rice pasta. Made from brown rice, the pasta has a similar consistency and taste to white-flour pasta, yet it contains a greater amount of fiber and protein, which helps your body digest it at a slower rate. Whole grains also contain an ample amount of nutrients, which white-flour foods tend to lose during the milling process. Preparing brown-rice pasta is similar to cooking regular pasta and can be used in its place for almost any recipe.

Step 1
Place 4 quarts of water in a large pot. Put the pot on the stove and bring the water to a boil.

Step 2
Pour 10-oz. --- or one box --- of brown-rice pasta into the boiling water.

Step 3
Add 1 tsp. salt and 1 tsp. oil to the water if you choose. The oil can help the pasta from sticking together. Alternately, stir the pasta while it is cooking to prevent it from sticking.

Step 4
Cook the pasta for 10 minutes in boiling water.

Step 5
Remove the pasta from heat after 10 minutes. Drain the pasta in a strainer and rinse with cold water for 30 to 60 seconds.

Step 6
Top the pasta with your favorite sauce, vegetables, cheese or meat and serve.
