Abstract

The objective of this contribution is to identify and validate a model to predict the heat-up and drying process of large wood particles, for which considerable gradients of temperature and vapour exist due to their size. One aim was to identify an approach that is generally applicable and does not require additional empirical correlations. Incineration of wood has gained importance as a substitute for fossil fuels, especially in Scandinavian countries. Wood chips contain a significant amount of water, which imposes restrictions on plant design and operation. The latter are often determined experimentally, however, numerical approaches have proven to be equally adequate tools to achieve this task. The present approach is based on the one-dimensional and transient conservation equations for energy and mass in cartesian ..
