New Acoustic Technology Evaluates Wood Quality of Standing Trees
The acoustic measurement system developed by Forest Service scientists and their collaborators has been integrated into the harvesting processor head, enabling tree quality evaluation during the harvesting operation. Peter Carter, Fibre-gen
Snapshot: Lack of techniques to assess the quality of standing trees results in inefficient allocation of timber resources and also limits the ability of forest managers to grow high-quality wood with appropriate silvicultural treatments. To address the problem, Forest Products Laboratory researchers and their partners developed an acoustic technology to evaluate the wood quality of standing trees.
