Abstract

A water-resistant plywood glue was developed from nami (Dioscorea hispida Dennst, family Dioscoreacea) starch that passed the tests required for exterior and interior plywood grades. The starch-based adhesive was formulated based on the modified Stein Hall system. Commercial phenol formaldehyde resin (HL 4645) at different levels was used as fortifier to improve bond strength. The formulated starch-based adhesive was applied to igem (Podocarpus imbricatus R. Br) veneers, with the following gluing conditions: glue spread -130 g/m2 agl; assembly time - 30 minutes;specific pressure - 15 kg/cm2; pressing temperature -5 minutes. Test results indicate that the glue bond strength containing 15.21% resin solids (RS) was comparable to that of the commercial phanolic resin with 31.47% RS. The resultant formulation would reduce plywood production cost by 62% for exterior type and 45% for interior type in terms of glue cost.
