Abstract

The increasing request of the use of sustainable packaging has driven developments in the area of biodegradable polymers. Such requests are due to the fact that these materials are usually used just once, which generates a large amount of waste. Among the biodegradable polymers, thermoplastic starch is the most important, mainly because it comes from natural and abundant source. However, their intrinsic characteristics make it unsuitable for packaging applications because this polymer presents low moisture resistance, high stiffness and difficulty in processing. To overcome such drawbacks, a viable alternative is to blend thermoplastic starch with low hydrophilicity, flexible and with adequate processability polymers, such as poly (butylene adipate-co-terephtalate) (PBAT). However, because these polymers are incompatible, chemical modifications of starch become necessary. In previous works, developed with financial support from FAPESP (process 2012/08380-4), the chemical modification of starch with maleic anhydride and sebacid acid by reactive processing for the formation of esters in starch chain was studied and, in a subsequent step, blends of thermoplastic starch (modified or not)/PBAT were produced and their compatibility studied by means of mechanical properties and morphological analyses. In this study, it was observed that the modification of thermoplastic starch with maleic anhydride has led to a greater compatibility between the phases starch/PBAT, but the morphological analysis indicated the presence of crystals of unreacted maleic anhydride in the compatibilized blends. Thus, continuing with this study, we intend to evaluate the influences of the maleic anhydride content and reaction time on the chemical modification of thermoplastic starch by reactive processing, and assess the influence of the concentration of reacted maleic anhydride, that may depend on the initial concentration and on the reaction time, in the mechanical properties, morphology and biodegradability of blends thermoplastic starch/PBAT. Abstract

Advanced polymeric composites have been standing out in the aerospace industry due to a favorable combination of low specific mass and high mechanical performance. Most of the advanced polymeric composites currently used are obtained from reinforced thermosetting resins; however, this material presents stress problems due to processing and the brittle nature of the resin. Thermoplastic polymers reinforced with continuous fibers are a great replacement when compared with conventional thermosetting polymers, due to advantages such as: higher values of rigidity and impact resistance, higher service temperature and wider versatility in series production. The aim of this work is to process thermoplastic composites with carbon fibers with different degrees of crystallinity and evaluate its influence on mechanical performance (vibration, compression and shear) and thermal performance (thermal dilatation coefficient by TMA and DMTA), involving different environmental conditionings (hygrothermal, UV and saline mist). The development of this project will count with the available structure at FEG UNESP, which is equipped with laboratories of mechanical testing, environmental conditioning, thermal analysis and processing of composites, all funded by FAPESP from the projects nr 2005/54358-7 (Influence of Hygrothermal Conditioning on Mechanical Properties of Composites with Aeronautical Applications), nr 2008/00171-1 (Evaluation of Crystallization and Curing Kinetics of Matrices used in Advanced Composites) and the project nr 2011/09062-3 (Evaluation of Mechanical and Thermal Performance of Aeronautical Thermoplastic Composites with Different Degrees of Crystallinity). During the execution of this work, composites constituted of carbon fibers agglutinated with PPS (polyphenylene sulphide) matrix and/or PEEK (polyetheretherketone) matrix will be processed. These matrices will be characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG). The results obtained from these analyses will support the choice of the most suitable processing conditions for these thermoplastic laminates. After processed, these laminates will characterized by the previously mentioned testing. (AU)

Abstract

New parameters and indicators that allow better assessment to Nanotechnology impact is the objective of development in this project, among other major issues. Something relevant to be considered at this point is the fact that nanotechnology offers the perspective of huge advances that will improve the quality of life and the environment conservation. There are many major applications in this area, however, as in any area that will make intensive use of new materials and chemicals. Another issue of extreme importance is that it can bring some risks to the environment and human health. This project intends to provide parameters or indicators that will allow the Assessment of the Nanotechnology Impacts - Case Study: Application of Nanoparticles and nanocapsules in Agriculture. What should be emphasized is the fact that the main objective here is to develop a new methodology to the Nanotechnology Impact Assessment making use of a general application software, called 'Impactos', that will be adjusted and modified for this study. This methodology will focus on identification and evaluation of the social and environmental impacts associated with the release of nanotechnologies, and furthermore on the adverse effects of the use of nanoparticles and nanocapsules dispersers, fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides. The important point to be highlighted here is that the new proposed methodology will be performed by selecting parameters within the environmental and social dimensions, which will be raised by experts in areas related to nanoscience. Aiming to promote interaction between the actors and the gathering of information relevant to develop the structure of components and impacts indicators referenced and validated, workshops will be organized, i.e. including face to face consultation with experts. The software "Impactos", which aims to assess the impacts of technology and research programs, was developed under projects financed by FAPESP and FINEP. The projects were conducted by the Study Group on the Organization of Research and Innovation, Department of Science and Technology Policy of the Institute of Geosciences (GEOPI / DPCT / UNICAMP). All this proposed formulation will be held in collaboration of the GEOPI. (AU)

Abstract

Currently, there are about 1.79 million hectares of Pinus and 65 000 of Tectona grandis (Teca) planted in Brazil. As in trees processing to obtain sawn timber, only 40 to 50% (by volume) are recovered, the amount of waste generated is significant. Though it can be biologically degraded, its concentration in certain places, its deposition or burning can cause negative environmental impacts. Considered the described situation, a relevant alternative is the use of such wastes in wood-based composites production, employing raw materials from renewable sources and waste recovery without emission of formaldehyde. The aim of this study is to assess the feasibility of production medium density particleboard (MDP) and oriented strand board (OSB) from waste of Pinus sp. having Teca as adding, in proportions of 0, 25, 50, 75, 100%. Epoxy (from residue paint powder) and natural polymer polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) will be the adhesives to apply in production of 180 panels, from which test specimens will be obtained in order to carry out physical and mechanical performance evaluation. Results will be statistically treated using analysis of variance of complete factorial design - DOE. (AU)

Abstract

The objective of the present project was the development of a better technology for the conversion of lignocellulosics (waste or not) and virgin or recycled thermoplastics in environmentally friendly products. The principal technologies studied were: formation of coats via air deposition (non-woven) and mixture via melting (extrusion and injection of mixtures). The steps in the project consisted of developing methods to convert lignocellulosic waste (newspaper, sugarcane bagasse and sawdust) mixed with thermoplastics (polypropylene, polyethylene and polystyrene); to optimize laboratory methods to produce composites for the automobile industry, derived from waste; to establish a database of diverse natural fibers(jute, sisal, ramie, coconut, curaua, flax, sugarcane bagasse etc.,) in different proportions and formulations, aiming for better adhesion and mechanical and physical properties; to establish the extension of the recycling processes of these composites and quantify the loss of properties; and to analyze their life cycle, principally in relation to the automobile industry. The composites were evaluated for their mechanical (bending, tension), impact (Izod) and physical (swelling and accelerated aging) properties. (AU)

Abstract

Society is increasingly conscious about its role in environmental protection, and picky about the care of businesses to conserve natural resources. In this situation, companies should seek the knowledge about the aspects and impacts from their products in the environment, aiming to direct efforts to improve their environmental performance. To do this, deserves a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for being a complete and effective technical in identifying opportunities for improving the environmental aspects of products at various points in its life cycle. Normalized in Brazil by NBR ISO 14040 and 14044, LCA quantifies the environmental impacts of a product from its origin to final disposal. The phases of an LCA are: Definition of Purpose and Scope, Inventory Analysis, Impact Assessment and Interpretation. This project will carry out an LCA study for the MDP wood-based panel product. MDP (medium density particleboard) is made from reconstituted wood and synthetic adhesive. It is widely used in the furniture industry for the production of residential and office furniture, being the wood panel most produced and consumed in the world. However, the environmental aspects and impacts related to the life cycle of this product are not fully known, and thus, are expected to develop this knowledge before the completion of the proposed project. The main results expected are the suggestion of improvements that could contribute to reducing environmental impacts throughout all phases of life cycle product, the selection and/or modification of environmental indicators and the subsidy of important information for researches and scientific publications. Abstract

Sustainable manufacturing has become an important area of research, where the use of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has relevant potential application. Recently, the single global methodology based on LCA developed for the Life Cycle Inventory(LCI) analysis of manufacturing processes was the CO2PE! Inititiative UPLCI. However, this methodology is limited just to the LCI of manufacturing processes and does not incorporate the Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) and Interpretation phases, which constitute an LCA study. Also, the use of LCA for sustainable manufacturing still faces other problems, like does not include the whole Life Cycle (LC) perspective and the uncertainties of the LCI data of manufacturing processes, which should be collected and analyzed in real-time production, through adequate supervision systems. Thus, in order to overcome such problems cited, this project aims to develop a methodological procedure for environmental assessment and monitoring of manufacturing processes based on LCA. According to literature and documents research step, a methodological procedure for evaluating environmental impacts of manufacturing processes will be developed, and its structure will be organized into three levels: product's LC, stratification and selection of manufacturing relevant processes, and the study of the selected processes's LC. For environmental monitoring, a remote system will be used for the processes monitoring in real-time that will be developed in NUMA center, together with LAPRAS lab. This monitoring system will be integrated with the methodological procedure, and subsequently applied to a case study for a process of rectification from LAPRAS-NUMA. The main result of the present project will be the methodological procedure designed to overcome the main problems mentioned above about the use of LCA in the field of sustainable manufacturing. The methodological procedure will allow the analysis of environmental performance of manufacturing processes at many levels, from the product's LC to the manufacturing process's LC and vice versa.
