Abstract
Society is increasingly conscious about its role in environmental protection, and picky about the care of businesses to conserve natural resources. In this situation, companies should seek the knowledge about the aspects and impacts from their products in the environment, aiming to direct efforts to improve their environmental performance. To do this, deserves a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for being a complete and effective technical in identifying opportunities for improving the environmental aspects of products at various points in its life cycle. Normalized in Brazil by NBR ISO 14040 and 14044, LCA quantifies the environmental impacts of a product from its origin to final disposal. The phases of an LCA are: Definition of Purpose and Scope, Inventory Analysis, Impact Assessment and Interpretation. This project will carry out an LCA study for the MDP wood-based panel product. MDP (medium density particleboard) is made from reconstituted wood and synthetic adhesive. It is widely used in the furniture industry for the production of residential and office furniture, being the wood panel most produced and consumed in the world. However, the environmental aspects and impacts related to the life cycle of this product are not fully known, and thus, are expected to develop this knowledge before the completion of the proposed project. The main results expected are the suggestion of improvements that could contribute to reducing environmental impacts throughout all phases of life cycle product, the selection and/or modification of environmental indicators and the subsidy of important information for researches and scientific publications.
