Overview

Puffy eyes occur when you have facial swelling under or around the eyes. Puffy eyes can give you a tired and worn-down appearance. Although certain remedies may temporarily relieve puffy eyes, such as placing cold cucumbers over them for 10 to 15 minute intervals, making changes to your diet can help permanently fix puffy eyes by resolving the underlying cause.

Water

One potential cause of puffy eyes is dehydration. If you are not drinking enough water, this can cause facial swelling, particularly in the area of the eyes. Drink a lot of water consistently throughout the day, at least six to eight glasses. Add water to your diet by eating foods that have a high water content as well. Some water rich vegetables and fruits include cucumbers, lettuce, celery, watermelon, grapefruit and carrots.

Limiting Salt

Diets high in sodium can cause fluid retention and lead to puffy eyes. The recommended daily allowance for sodium falls in the range of 1,500 and 2,400 mg a day, but most people consume twice that amount. Cutting out foods high in salt from your diet can help relieve puffiness in the eyes. Limit processed foods since they are high in salt, like hot dogs, lunch meats, frozen food meals and bacon. Canned items are high in salt as well, like canned vegetables and soups. Use spices like pepper to flavor your food instead of table salt. Condiments such as ketchup, mustard and salad dressing are high in sodium and should only be used in moderation.

Restricting Diuretics

Certain beverages that act as diuretics can lead to puffiness in the eyes. Steer clear of alcohol and caffeinated beverages if you want to avoid this problem. Carbonated beverages should be limited as well if you want to reduce swelling around the eyes.
