There are no reliable visual methods for distinguishing gypsy moth males caught in pheromone traps from populations with and without females capable of flight. Flight-capable females can be distinguished from flightless females by determining forewing length relative to body size, but not by using wing color patterns. For this reason, methods had to be developed to predict the origin and female flight capability of the intercepted gypsy moth individuals.
