Established in 1909, the Superior is known for its boreal forest ecosystem, numerous clean lakes, and a colorful cultural history. The one million-acre Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness lies within the boundaries of the Forest. Management by the USDA-Forest Service, under principles of ecosystem management and multiple use, the Forest provides for a diverse community of plants and animals as well as products for human needs. The concept of "all lands" management maintains strong partnerships and collaboration across the landscape. Popular recreational activities include fishing, hunting, camping, canoeing, swimming, hiking, snowmobiling, cross country skiing and ice fishing. Withdrawal of Federal Minerals in Rainy River Watershed from Exploration and Development
On January 13, 2017, the U.S. Forest Service published a notice of intent (NOI) in the Federal Register to prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) to study the proposed 20-year withdrawal of federal minerals on the Superior National Forest within the Rainy River Watershed. The EIS will also support an amendment to the Superior National Forest Land and Resource Management Plan. The NOI identifies the Forest Service as the lead agency for the EIS analysis under the National Environmental Policy Act and initiates a 90-day scoping period to gather public input on the proposed withdrawal. A public meeting is planned for March 16 at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center. Details about the proposal and guidance for commenting are posted on the Project page.
Road Study Update - Travel Analysis Report Now Available.
The Forest Service has released all of the Travel Analysis Reports that analyze the existing roads systems to identify opportunities to achieve a sustainable road system for each National Forest and Prairie.
USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service and Forest Service support North Shore Coastal Forest Restoration
Through the Joint Chiefs’ Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Partnership in northeast Minnesota (MN), the USDA Forest Service (FS) and Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) are investing funds and technical expertise to support ongoing efforts to restore and protect forest health, maintain clean water, and improve wildlife habitat in the MN North Shore Coastal Forest.
