ABSTRACT
In this paper the authors present the results of their own researches regarding the simultaneous influence of two by two of the three important influencing factors on the formaldehyde emission of particleboards, respectively: temperature, thickness and configuration of test samples from the board pack analyzed. The determinations were made on a batch of particleboards having the thickness of 8, 12, 16 and 18mm under the conditions of the temperatures of 23°C, 40°C, 50°C and 60°C, taking into account seven configurations of test samples, one of them being according to the present standard in force SR EN 717-3/1996 and six others adopted as being similar to different situations that may occur in practice. It was observed that the formaldehyde emission is influenced more by temperature than by the thickness of particleboards. Irrespective of the board's thickness and temperature, the formaldehyde emission is unevenly distributed on the surface of the test samples pack in its different configurationally variants, and it decreases in the following range of studied configurations: VA, V, VB, VE VD, VC and VE. The greatest absolute formaldehyde emission was registered for a new adopted (unstandardized) configuration, VA type, when the emission takes place through all faces and edges of the boards in the pack. Thus the authors consider that this configuration should be used within the previously mentioned standard, instead of the present one. For all the studied thicknesses and temperatures, the formaldehyde emission takes place more through the edges of particleboards than through their faces.
