The influence of low styrene content on the decay resistance of an aspen wood polymer composite

ABSTRACT
The current study evaluated the usefulness of low styrene polymer loadings, with and without boric acid, in protecting aspen against decay by Gloeophyllum trabeum and Trametes versicolor. The styrene solution at polymer loadings of 55 percent (by weight) failed to prevent decay by Gloeophyllum trabeum but was able to prevent decay by Trametes versicolor. The pretreatment of boric acid did not improve the protection against Gloeophyllum trabeum and also reduced the protection of the wood polymer composite against Trametes versicolor. The leachability of boric acid was very high even with the styrene solution. It was concluded that at lower polymer loadings (55%) some protection is provided against white-rot fungi but not against brown-rot fungi.
